Michael P. Leathers, MD is a skilled orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician in Sacramento, California. Inspired by his patients, Dr. Leathers chose to pursue a specialty in sports medicine because the men and women he treats are highly motivated to improve their health and performance.
Dr. Leathers earned his medical degree and graduated with honors of the highest distinction from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. While there, Dr. Leathers was invited to join Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the most prestigious honor society exclusive to only the top medical students in the country.
Following graduation, Dr. Leathers went on to complete his internship in general surgery and his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles. He then completed his fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder replacement at the University of California, San Francisco. This fellowship emphasized advanced reconstruction of knee ligaments, shoulder ligaments, tendons, and replacements for arthritis, as well as hip arthroscopy.
In addition to attending the top orthopedic training programs in the country, Dr. Leathers is an accomplished presenter and has authored publications on multiple topics, including shoulder replacements, ACL reconstructions, pediatric fractures, and cartilage defects in the knee.
Whether he’s reconstructing a torn ACL in a professional football player or repairing a rotator cuff in a weekend tennis player, Dr. Leathers is motivated by the enthusiasm of the athletes in his care.
