On Metastatic #BreastCancer Awareness Day, we’re so honored to share Kerry’s story – one of persistence, strength, and grit. Kerry was first diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma when she was 16 years old but then was cancer-free for over 20 years. At 37, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which her doctors believe was either a side effect of radiation or due to a BRCA mutation. She underwent a double mastectomy and a prophylactic hysterectomy then had a recurrence a few years later. Now 45 years old, Kerry found out she had another recurrence just days before she was scheduled to move to Florida. She put those plans on hold to receive daily radiation treatments at #MSKNassau for what is now considered stage IV breast cancer, also known as metastatic breast cancer.
Through all of these obstacles and setbacks, Kerry has been an avid runner and CrossFitter. She even runs after every radiation appointment! She loves staying active but it’s also her way of taking back control and being able to bounce back quickly after surgery or treatment. Kerry said she felt embarrassed at first when she had a recurrence as if she had failed. But then she says, she realized, “F*&^ that! I AM stronger than you, cancer, and I will be stronger than you and I will beat you and I’ll fight, fight, fight.”
Kerry’s journey shows that breast cancer doesn’t necessarily look a certain way and that there’s so much more to Breast Cancer Awareness Month than prevention and pink ribbons, which is why awareness of metastatic breast cancer is so important. We’re so grateful to Kerry for letting us share her story to help spread this awareness. And for the cherry on top, today also happens to be Kerry’s last day of radiation! Please help us congratulate her in the comments and cheer her on! 💪🏃♀️

Yesterday was a very special day for Michael - it was his last visit with Dr. La Quaglia! Michael was diagnosed with an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor at the age of 5 and had several surgeries at MSK that he credits with saving his life. One of the surgeries to remove the tumor left him with a paralyzed vocal cord and diaphragm. Luckily, doctors were able to repair Michael's vocal cords and restore his normal voice, which he definitely needs because he writes, sings, and records his own music! Michael is now 25 years old and plans to take the LSAT to go to law school and pursue a career in the criminal justice system.
Here's what Michael shared with us for #SurvivorSaturday: "Today was officially my last visit as an MSKCC pediatric patient. Saying that doesn’t even sound remotely real. It is an indescribable accomplishment being that 20 years ago this month, I was getting ready for the first time to put my life in this man’s hands. I couldn’t be more eternally grateful for God bringing us together! I truly owe you everything that I have become and everything I have done with my life! 3 surgeries that were all life-threatening and each time God gave you the ability to keep me alive. Thank you Dr. Michael La Quaglia from the bottom of my heart! Words, songs, and every other way I could possibly express my gratitude will never even touch upon how truly grateful I am. God bless you always Doc Mike and all the nurses & staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center! (My dad was unable to come with us because of COVID rules, but I have to give major thanks to my parents for being along for this wild ride, they’ve been my cornerstone always & yes that notebook my Mom’s holding is only a fraction of the notes she’s been taking for these past 20 years!) This one's for all those who didn’t get to leave with me! 🙏🏼“
He also added, "I truly am just humbled to be a survivor. Because of my time in the hospitals, I’ve seen far too often families not get the same end result. I just hope that my music can even help one person through their struggles." We can't wait to see what you do next, Michael!

This #FeelGoodFriday is in honor of Suzette, who's on a mission to get through her #breastcancer treatment and inspire others with humor. She's a producer and founder of NYLaughs.org, a NYC comedy nonprofit and is also sharing content on her own social media to help others heal through laughter.
Suzette also wants to use her platform to educate others on breast cancer among black women, who are 40% more likely to die than white women. Additionally, people of color experience more illness, worse outcomes, and premature death compared to white people, and also face more obstacles for care. Suzette's Instagram is an intersection of info about breast cancer, support for communities of color, and of course, humor.
Suzette says that while she is focused on getting through chemo and radiation, in addition to recently shaving her head, her main goal is "to make the path easier for anyone that comes after me." Thank you for the laughs and inspiration, Suzette!

“I never thought I’d get to call myself a long-term cancer survivor.” Meet Annie Ellis, a Patient Advisor with MSK's Patient and Family Advisory Council for Quality (PFACQ).
Annie was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2004 and experienced 2 recurrences, 3 debulking surgeries, 5 lines of treatment and participated in a Phase 1 clinical trial. An early stage breast cancer in 2010 included more surgery, radiation and physical therapy for lymphedema. Now NED (No Evidence of Disease) with both cancers, Annie recently reflected on the many treatments, surgeries, tests, scans and follow-up visits at MSK.
“I know the doctors, nurses, technicians and hospital and clinic staff are extremely caring and compassionate,” stated Ms. Ellis, “but until I joined PFACQ, I had no idea how many more brilliant professionals are also constantly hard at work behind the scenes to ensure the highest quality of patient care at MSK.” MSK's PFACQ is a group of patients and caregivers that sit on various hospital committees and projects to provide the patient and family member perspective to better improve the patient and caregiver experience at MSK.
Annie draws on her many experiences as a patient to provide peer support through MSK’s Patient to Patient Program and to bring a broad patient perspective as research advocate with NCI, FDA, ASCO and ovarian cancer organizations. She is thrilled to also use these experiences with #PFACQ assignments in the areas of patient education and clinical trials. Ellis adds, “It’s quite extraordinary how everyone I’ve been involved with really listens to the patient perspective and incorporates our collective view in their work. This is true teamwork!”
"Our goal is always to find the best treatment for every patient."
For nearly two decades, MSK has led the way in matching people who have lung cancer with the best targeted therapies for their disease.

Melissa rang the bell in February to mark the end of her radiation treatment for breast cancer. We checked in to see how she’s doing, and she shared this awesome recent photo with us. It’s clear that she’s thriving! Melissa said after having a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, and the radiation, she’s currently in the reconstruction phase but is getting stronger every day.
When asked what she would tell that version of herself ringing the bell in February, Melissa said it would be, “You got this, girl, and never doubt yourself ever again. I am so proud of you for getting up every day and trying, even if all you were able to do was smile.”
Melissa’s future plans include finishing her nursing degree and becoming a nurse! She wants to work with cancer patients who are going through chemotherapy, as it holds a special place in her heart.
Melissa’s message to anyone else experiencing cancer is, “Remember to be kind to yourself. You will have a new normal and that’s okay. You got this!”

This spring, several of our own #MSKHealthcareHeroes were treated at MSK for COVID19. One of them was physician-scientist Dr. Yu Chen. In May, we shared a video of him being discharged from the hospital. We spoke with him recently to learn more about his experience and see how he’s been doing since.
Dr. Chen told us he was diagnosed at the peak of the first wave of the pandemic in New York City. He began feeling progressively worse and was admitted to the hospital on April 7. He knew he wanted to be treated at MSK because he knew how outstanding the nurses are and how much they care about their patients.
Dr. Chen ended up spending several days in the ICU, but was actually one of the first patients to receive convalescent plasma as part of a clinical trial at MSK. He improved very quickly within 24 hours and left the ICU three days later, then went home five days after that. He was able to begin working again from home within about a week. Dr. Chen says his colleagues were incredibly supportive throughout and rallied around his family. (Pictured here is the photo he and his two daughters sent to them to say thank you!) Luckily, he said he has no lingering effects from the disease.
Above all, Dr. Chen said, “I really want to give a special shout out to the nurses and nurse assistants. The nurses were the true front line people. They make as big if not bigger impact on the inpatient care.” We’re so happy to have Dr. Chen back at work with us!

Year in Review: Top 10 MSK Cancer Science Breakthroughs of 2020
You may remember Enver and Miranda from their MSK wedding back in August. Enver was receiving inpatient treatment for leukemia which made them realize they didn’t want to wait to get married. So Enver’s care team made magic happen on M12 in what he calls the most emotional moment of his life. It even got featured in The New York Times!
We checked in with them to see how they’re doing. Enver says that “married life is the best.” He was discharged from the hospital a week after the wedding and is currently undergoing outpatient chemotherapy. He says it’s been hard, especially because Miranda can’t be with him while he’s getting treatment due to the pandemic, but that the RNs at MSK make it as comfortable as possible and cheer him up.
When Enver has time off from chemo, he and Miranda try to make the most of their time together by going on hikes and doing things like celebrating Hanukkah. They’re looking forward to an end to the pandemic so they can celebrate their marriage with friends and family.
When asked what he would like to tell his previous self from August, Enver said, “Just listen to what your wife says. She is going to be right about almost everything in the next four months and perhaps in the future.” Very wise words! 😉

In June, we shared this photo of Beatriz celebrating the one-year anniversary of her stem cell transplant. She had a rare type of lymphoma called gray zone lymphoma. Swipe through to see how she’s doing now! Beatriz marked one-year cancer-free anniversary in September and participated in her first BMT Thrivers Celebration in October, an annual MSK event for transplant survivors. She also took part in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night event and raised over $4K with the help of family and friends.
Beatriz admits that the COVID-19 pandemic gave her a “small meltdown” at first. All of the necessary precautions were reminders of what she had just been through with her transplant, and she had been hoping 2020 would be a better year after two rough years. But then she says, “I remembered why I had chemo, why I went through the transplant procedure and why I fought so hard, and I started enjoying my time being at home. [It was a] second opportunity to appreciate what’s important.”
Next month, Beatriz will be turning 40! Her goal is to continue to prioritize her health and happiness, and adds that she couldn’t have done this without her family and friends who were there with her every step of the way. Her advice to anyone going through something similar is, “Stay positive, don’t allow cancer to define you and keep life as normal as possible.”

What You Should Know about the COVID-19 Vaccines
(Pictured here is the photo he and his two daughters sent to them to say thank you!) 😷 Think you’re free from masks and social distancing once you're vaccinated for COVID-19? Not so fast.
Here's why it's so important to keep protecting yourself and others from COVID-19.
MSKCC.ORG
Why You Need to Wear a Mask Even After Getting the COVID-19 Vaccine
Last April, Dr. Richard O'Reilly, a pediatric oncologist at #MSKKids, our pediatric program, was hospitalized at MSK with COVID-19. He's now back at work, has received both doses of the vaccine, and is feeling stronger than ever. 💪
While being treated, Dr. O'Reilly said his friends from around the hospital looked in on him often and "they did a good job of seeing to it that I was okay. The nursing staff was spectacular and just terrific in terms of encouraging me all the way through. I can't say enough about them."
When Dr. O'Reilly was discharged from MSK, there was a cheering crowd waiting for him. And of course, he was rocking his #MSKKids t-shirt. 🎗
Dr. O'Reilly went back to work in late May and said he felt so lucky to be able to just sit down at his desk and reflect on how he got through a horrible experience. He wants everyone to know that it's still so important to wear a mask, socially distance, and use caution for both yourself and your family, as he doesn't want anyone else to experience what he did.
Dr. O'Reilly is known as "the founding father of bone marrow transplant." He was the first doctor to conduct a successful marrow transplant from an unrelated compatible donor in 1973, now performed on 2,500 patients annually. He is truly an #MSKHealthcareHero and we're so glad he's feeling "back to square one"!

As we mark one year since the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, we look back at the unprecedented challenges we all faced as the crisis unfolded in real time. This is how 20,000+ #MSKHealthcareHeroes came together in innovative ways while safely moving forward with patient care and research.
For today's Survivor Saturday, meet Nicole, a colorectal cancer survivor. Her story was previously featured in Bridges, our newsletter written by survivors for survivors, which you can read here: https://bit.ly/3c3YPM6
Nicole was only 37 when she started experiencing symptoms that prompted her to request a colonoscopy. Her doctor diagnosed her with stage three colorectal cancer. She says she's so glad she chose MSK because "I feel confident that I have the best team caring for me." Nicole is now 41 and living in remission and says, "Cancer has definitely changed
my outlook on life and has shown me my own strength and resilience."
Since then, Nicole has been busy! She recently became a Patient Peer Volunteer with MSK to support others going through what she experienced. She has a new podcast coming soon called Anointed Care and also has a column in the quarterly @963img Magazine dedicated to cancer patients and caregivers to further spread awareness and bring hope. Thank you, Nicole, for sharing your story!

On the last Feel Good Friday of Colorectal Cancer Month, meet Michael, a colorectal cancer survivor. He first shared his story with us last year in Bridges, our newsletter for survivors, which you can read here: https://bit.ly/3rpjzme.
While Michael is still dealing with some effects from his treatment, he says he feels "lucky I’m alive, lucky I’m here, and lucky I’m cancer-free.” He's dedicating himself to helping others in the LGBTQ+ community through their own cancer journeys. He's also a big advocate for the MSK Patient and Caregiver Support Program and is still in touch with his mentor from the program.
Michael says, “My life is now a new adventure every day. My mind is much more open to opportunities than ever before, and I never forget that life is worth fighting for at all costs.”
