The 4 C's ) Carat Carat is a unit of measurement that expresses the weight of a diamond. One carat is equivalent to 1/5 of a gram. One carat is divided into 100 “points”, so a “50-point” diamond weighs half a carat. As the carat size of a given quality diamond increases, so does its rarity, and consequently, its price. II) Color Color actually refers to the absence of color. Therefore, the more transparent a diamond is, the more rare and valuable it is. Diamond color is evaluated and classified according to a scale that extends from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). The exception is fancy-colored diamonds such as pinks and blues, which do not fit into this classification. III) Clarity Clarity refers to the absence of inclusions and blemishes. Diamonds without these birthmarks are incredibly rare and valuable. Diamond clarity is evaluated and classified according to a scale that extends from Flawless (FL) to diamonds with obvious inclusions (I3). Inclusions that are invisible to the naked eye or which are present in small quantities do not affect the brilliance of a diamond in any way. Inclusions are actually traces left by nature when the diamond was being formed. Just like our own fingerprints, these markings give a diamond it its unique identity and character. IV) Cut Although it is not mentioned very often, the cut of a diamond is an essential aspect of a diamond. Diamond cutting requires extremely detailed and meticulous precision by a highly skilled craftsman. It is only when a diamond is cut to exacting proportions that the true beauty of a diamond becomes unveiled. A diamond that is cut too deep will appear dark and smaller in face-up size when placed next to an exceptionally cut diamond. Similarly, when a diamond is cut too shallow, the diamond will appear watery and dull looking.
