If there are neighborhood cats, please provide shelter with straw, food and water multiple times a day. Yay โ itโs a snow day! โ๏ธ Your dog wants to ๐๐ผ๐ the snow instead of play with it. Is this ok? The answer is yes ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ no. Clean snow, in small quantities, is ok. However keep these rules in mind:
โข Keep your dog away from snow that is treated with ice melt/salt, is discolored, or has been plowed. There may be objects hiding in that snow that are not safe to eat!
โข If your dog tends to eat a lot of snow when he gets thirsty and this causes him to vomit, limit exposure, bring him inside and offer him a bowl of water. If this continues - contact us to make sure there isn't a problem.
โข Never let your dog drink from snow puddles where ice melt may have been used -- avoid walking your dog in those areas, too.
โข Keep bags of ice melt out of reach of your dog.
โข Ice Melt can irritate your dogโs paws so if you are going for a long walk โ you might want to consider dog booties on his paws for protection.
โข If no booties, be sure to clean your dog's paws with a damp cloth after walking in areas where ice melt was used. Don't let him lick his paws until they are clean.
โข If your dog ate snow and is feeling sick, give us a call or if itโs after hours reach out to Med Vet Indy, Airport Animal Emergicenter, or VCA Advanced Care. If you suspect your dog ate snow that contains ice melt, immediately call the Pet Poison Hotline at 800-213-6680.
Other handy snow tips:
โข Use a whisk to help remove pesky snow balls from your pets coat. Use it like a brush to help loosen and remove them.
โข Be sure to check under pawpads and remove painful ice chunks/snow pellets from under your pets paws as well when coming in for a break from the snow.
โข If you are cold โ ๐ฉ๐๐๐ฎ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ค๐ก๐. Take breaks often if playing in the snow and donโt overdo it.

Did you know we use these fun "sticky" mats as pictured here during our examinations? The rubbery, circular mat has little grippers that stick it down and keep it from sliding away. It also has grooves on it to slow your furbaby down as they lick the yummies off. Easy cheese is the fan favorite - and clearly Vinny's too! ๐ง It keeps pups busy and those tails wagging when performing procedures during all the parts of our exam!
