Dr. Kristen Estes is originally from Falmouth, Massachusetts. Having always loved horses, she learned to ride and show hunters at an early age. Growing up, she could almost always be found at the barn with her sisters and beloved pony, Owen. She attended Smith College in Northampton, MA where she majored in biology. During her time at Smith, she was a member of both the field hockey and equestrian teams all four years. After college, she headed south to attend Lincoln Memorial University – College of Veterinary Medicine, in Harrogate, Tennessee, to pursue her veterinary degree. Dr. Estes enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine, and has a special interest in emergency and critical care, neonatal intensive care, rehabilitation and integrative medicine. In her free time, you can usually find her hiking with her dog, Rupert, at a local coffee shop, or at the beach. “This week we honor the unsung heroes of our profession. Our technicians work tirelessly behind the scenes to provide excellent care to our patients. They are the backbone our practice and without their extraordinary care and dedication Mid-Atlantic wouldn’t be the institution that it has developed into over the past 25 years. Happy Veterinary Technician’s Week to an outstanding team of technicians.” — Dr. Rodney Belgrave
Thanks Therapeutic Touch by Kim LLC for giving our techs some TLC! #nationalveterinarytechnicianweek
We’re half way through National Veterinary Technicians Week! Here’s what Dr. Janik Gasiorowski has to say about our staff, “They say the devil is in the details. Well luckily for the horses, so too are the technicians at Mid Atlantic Equine. Their watchful eyes and caring hands are largely responsible for the continued health of so many sick and injured horses. Personally, I owe them a debt of gratitude for making it so enjoyable to come to work no matter what time of day or night. Thank you all, you are amazing!”

Repost from @midatlantic_equine (add us on Instagram!) • We’re here with your Wednesday learns 🤓. Check out this recent hospital case 🩺! A 19 year-old Friesian stallion was presented to our internal medicine service with a history of recurrent choke and hypersalivation. On presentation the patient was bright, alert, and responsive, and basic physical examination parameters were unremarkable. Dr. Belgrave and his team performed esophageal endoscopy to evaluate the lumen (interior) of the esophagus. Saliva was present throughout the esophagus with significant pooling in the distal esophagus just before the lower esophageal sphincter. Other diagnostics included bloodwork, oral examination, upper respiratory tract endoscopy, gastroscopy, and thoracic radiographs. Findings were generally unremarkable; the patient had a mildly elevated SAA, which is a marker for acute inflammation and infection. There was no radiographic evidence of aspiration pneumonia. A barium swallow study was performed to assess the esophagus dynamically (i.e. through its function of swallowing). A bolus of radiographic contrast was delivered via nasoesophageal tube and serial radiographs were obtained to image the passage of the contrast through the esophagus as the material was swallowed and moved into the stomach. The study confirmed the presence of esophageal dilation and poor motility in the distal esophageal region, consistent with a diagnosis of megaesophagus. Megaesophagus is considered a congenital condition in the Friesian breed; it is associated with muscular hypertrophy in the distal esophagus. The average age of onset in the breed is 11 years of age. Affected horses may exhibit excessive salivation and nasal discharge, associated with periodic intraluminal esophageal obstruction (choke). Our patient did well during his stay and was re-fed without evidence of choke or hypersalivation. He was discharged with instructions to feed his grain in mash form, to feed hay from a slow feeder hay net, and to offer all meals at an elevated level in an effort to minimize choke recurrence. He continues to do well at home on this program. Any questions? DM us, we love to teach 📚!
