Doctors told Darrel Slater that he wouldn’t be home before Christmas, but he was overjoyed when he was able to return home in time for Thanksgiving. After spending 118 days in the hospital fighting COVID-19 with 96 of those on a ventilator, Slater was transferred to MidAmerica Rehabilitation Hospital for rehabilitation to regain his strength and independence.
During the pandemic, our team at MidAmerica Rehabilitation Hospital is proud to have helped several post COVID-19 patients regain their strength and function and return home after winning their battles.

By the second week in the hospital battling COVID-19 and pneumonia, Lafayette Johnson’s lungs collapsed, and his kidneys were shutting down. He had to be placed on a ventilator. By the fourth week, he had a heart attack and was placed on a second life support. When he finally woke up, he was extremely weak.
“COVID-19 devastated every muscle in my body, and I was in a hospital bed for five months,” he said. “I lost 57 pounds and wasn’t even able to stand up. I didn’t give up—even after dying twice. I came back.”
