Friday Factoid - What type of Frankoma clay is that?
From the 1930’s until today Frankoma pottery has been made with Oklahoma clay. Early pieces were made from light beige “Ada Clay,”
sourced from the Arbuckle Mountains outside Ada, Oklahoma. That clay ran out so another clay had to be found. Mineral-rich reddish Sapulpa Clay replaced Ada, slightly altering the appearance of the pieces. You can usually tell the difference. If you’re not sure use the “wet finger method" to determine whether a piece is made of Ada Clay or Sapulpa Clay. Wet the end of your finger and touch the unglazed portion (usually the bottom) of the piece. If it is Ada clay, it will not change color. If it is Sapulpa clay, it will darken. Usually the earlier Ada pieces will be worth more money, so it’s good to know the difference!

Friday Factoid - What is that thing? Many will know that the porcelain box on the right is a ladies powder box, but in my experience, most people have no idea what the item on the left is. “Is it missing something?” No, that’s the way it should be, with a hole in the top! It’s called a “hair receiver.” A hair receiver is a small pot, typically made of porcelain, bronze, or glass, with a hole in the lid. It was kept on the dressing table in the Victorian era to store hair removed from brushes and combs. The hair was recycled in a number of ways, but usually for stuffing small mesh bags, about 3 to 4 inches across, called ratts. These unfortunately named ratts were used to enhance women's hairstyles. Some people collect hair receivers as they make an interesting collection.
