Currently, there is no recommendation to discontinue wearing contact lenses as a way to prevent COVID-19 transmission. However, proper precautions must be taken to avoid putting yourself at unnecessary risk.
Based on the advice of the American Optometric Association (AOA), here are four things that contact lenses wearers need to know about wearing and caring for their contact lenses during the current COVID-19 pandemic:
1. Always wash your hands properly before handling your contact lenses: Contact lens wearers touch their face and eyes while inserting and removing contact lenses, which can be unsafe if hands are not properly washed. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, followed by hand drying with unused paper towels. If soap and water is unavailable, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
2. Disinfect your contact lenses daily - Disinfect your lenses with a contact lens solution appropriate for your lenses and that has been recommended by your eye care provider. Daily disposable lenses are the safest option as they are disposed of every evening after removal.
3. Discontinue contact lens wear if feeling sick - COVID-19 along with other common viruses can cause conjunctivitis. For this reason it is always recommended to discontinue contact lens wear while sick. If you are feeling ill and you think you may have contracted conjunctivitis call our office to receive a telehealth call with one of our doctors on call.
4. Glasses are not proven to offer protection - Glasses have not been proven to provide protection against COVID-19 transmission. We still recommend giving your eyes a break from contacts once in a while.

Do you find yourself in front of a screen now more than ever? Between working remotely from home, binge watching TV and video chatting with our loved ones, our electronic devices seem to be the only way to stay connected these days. Did you know that nearly 70% of American adults experience some form of digital eye strain due to prolonged use of electronic devices? Many of those suffering do nothing to reduce their discomfort, mainly due to lack of knowledge.
.
Symptoms include:
Headaches and Migraines
Tearing, burning and redness from dry eyes
Tired Eyes
Blurred vision
Neck and shoulder pain
Sleep disturbances
.
Tips for reducing digital eye strain:
1. Practice the 20/20/20 rule - for every 20 minutes on a screen look away for 20 seconds or longer at a target at least 20 feet away
2. Blink more frequently - blinking helps keep our eyes lubricated. When we look at a screen our blink rate reduces. Practice forceful blinking every hour.
3. Adjust screen brightness - Screen brightness should match ambient light levels in your surroundings. In other words, after the sun sets, brightness on all devices should be reduced.
4. Wear blue light filtering glasses - Prolonged exposure to artificial blue light not only contributes to glare and eye strain, it can also disrupt our sleep cycle. Utilize your “night shift” or “blue light filter” mode on your phone and tablet to filter out the blue/green light from your screen.
5. Warm compresses -Moist heat helps activate the oil glands in our eyelids which help keep your tears from evaporating as quickly. We recommend doing hot compresses for 10 minutes a day.
6. Walk away every hour - Studies show that just a 5 minute walking break every hour can reduce fatigue and improve energy levels as well as mood.
7. Eat more dark leafy greens - Dark leafy greens are the best source of lutein and zeaxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in our retina and play an important role in absorbing harmful blue light.
All offices closed until state restrictions lifted. Doctors available by phone for urgent matters.
