If there is an undeniable signifier of making it big in STEM, having your work cited by Stephen Hawking would surely be it. For a 22 year old Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski, receiving Hawking’s endorsement for her 2015 work completing the Pasterski-Strominger-Zhiboedov Triangle was yet another accolade on her already expansive resume. A self described “proud, first-generation Cuban-American”, Pasterski had been impressing onlookers long before she entered the world of theoretical physics. An influential first flight left such a mark on a young Pasterski that by the age of twelve she had self-built a fully functional aircraft. While in undergrad at MIT Sabrina achieved a 5.0 GPA and participated in experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. She pursued her PhD at Harvard where she helped to discover the Spin Memory Effect - a way to verify the net effects of gravitational waves. Pasterski’s current research at the Princeton Center resulted in her being deemed “the next Einstein”- a comparison she has humbly discouraged. She has also been the recipient of multiple research grants as well as job offers at both NASA and Blue Origin. Sabrina has proven to be a strong advocate for STEM. She was instrumental in the Let Girls Learn initiative and she has been recognized by the Annenberg Foundation for her work promoting STEM education to girls in Cuba. Pasterski’s work within her field has been a lesson in understanding some of the universe's most complex riddles: one of her papers has even been added Harvard’s grad school curriculum. She is exemplary of representation within a space that is too often lacking in diversity. Women make up 24% of the STEM workforce with only 2.7% being Latina. A lack of representational figures within STEM is thought to be one of the leading reasons that Latinas are less likely to pursue degrees within the field. Pasterski is actively working to bring change through her curricular and extracurricular efforts. Latinx Heritage Month is a time to recognize those within the community whose light shines bright enough to illuminate the path for others, and Pasterski is so radiant that we may need to add sunglasses to our product line.

Mario J. Molina (left) fondly remembers the excitement he felt while first observing paramecia and amoebae through a toy microscope as a child. His newfound interest in scientific research resulted in him converting the bathroom of his childhood home in Mexico City into a makeshift lab. After high school Molina enrolled in the chemical engineering program at UNAM and then decided to pursue a Ph.D. in physical chemistry. He spent two years researching kinetics of polymerizations in Germany before moving to the U.S. to join the physical chemistry program at UC Berkley. It was there that Molina began to conduct the experiments that would help shape his most well-known contribution to Earth science: documenting the harmful effects of CFCs, a class of dangerous carbon compounds. Molina had this to say on his research: “At first the research did not seem to be particularly interesting – I carried out a systematic search for processes that might destroy the CFCs in the lower atmosphere, but nothing appeared to affect them…The question was not only what destroys them, but more importantly, what the consequences are. We realized that the chlorine atoms produced by the decomposition of the CFCs would catalytically destroy ozone.” Molina and his research partner Sherwood Rowland (right) published their findings in 1974. They deemed it critical to not only share their work with other scientists, but with policy makers and the media to spur the change necessary to reduce the impact of CFCs. This resulted in directives in 1994 and 1997 that phased out their usage in all but medical applications. Molina’s story is exemplary of the influence that individuals can have on STEM, and while it is a story of inspiration, it is unfortunately not the norm. According to WHIEEH, Latinx individuals are underrepresented in STEM programs and are not sufficiently exposed to STEM subjects at the K-12 Levels. Their solution includes sparking Latinx student interest in STEM at a young age. This is why representational figures like Molina are valuable beyond their direct contributions to STEM, as they may also serve to inspire the next generation of diverse scientific researchers.
