Minnie’s Food Pantry opened on April 1st, 2008 after
Cheryl "Action" Jackson came to the realization that one in five children in Texas suffers from hunger.
She decided she needed to join in the rescue mission by providing free food to
individuals, families and kids. Six years later, Minnie’s is one of the
largest food pantries in Collin County Texas and has served almost four million
meals.What Minnie’s Food Pantry has
to give depends on what is donated. The food bank is supplied solely by food drives and donations from generous sponsors.Items that are often given out are milk, cheese,
canned vegetables, canned tuna, fresh and frozen meat, canned entrees, pasta,
peanut butter and salads. Families are allowed to pick up their groceries once
a month.Criteria as to who can receive food is set up by federal guidelines
based on income. Individuals must have a valid ID and proof of residency. Persons
living at the same address or sharing a kitchen will receive food as one “family”. If people are
renting rooms in a home, the owner must come and pick up the groceries for that
household.Minnie’s offers special
programs too. During the school year, free school breakfast and lunch might be
the only nourishment a child gets. The "Summer Lunch Program" offers bagged
lunches, including snacks, to children up to age 18. The "Thanksgiving Giveaway" uses volunteers to gather all the ingredients for a Thanksgiving dinner so regular visitors, as well as families referred by local schools, can get
everything they need for a meal they can really celebrate. There
