BRRRR! It’s cold out there! The cold weather is officially here and besides bundling yourself up to stay warm, winterizing your home (especially your furnace) should be top priority! Your furnace is an essential in cold weather so making sure that it’s prepared for the coldest months of the year is important. Here are some tips on how to prepare your system for the rest of the winter. 🥶🥶
Tip #1: Clean and/or replace the filter.
The filter is one of the most important parts of your system. Clogged filters cause big problems! It can stop the flow of warm air, which means that the system needs to work even harder to deliver the heat to your home. If this is prolonged, the system will wear out quickly. Be sure to clean the filters on a monthly basis. They should be completely replaced every couple of months.
Tip #2: Clean out the inside of the furnace.
When you open up the inside of the furnace, you will likely see a buildup of dust and other debris, often at the base of the heater area. You don’t need any special equipment to clean this out – just a regular vacuum. Vacuum it out and get it cleaned so it can function efficiently.
Tip #3: Be sure vents aren’t blocked.
If your furnace vents are obstructed, it can cause your whole system to fail. Be sure that your vents aren’t covered by furniture. Also, be sure to check the inside of the vents if you can to be sure that dirt or other debris isn’t clogging them.
If you want us to take a thorough look at the inside and outside of your furnace to be sure that it is ready to tackle the bitter cold of winter this year, contact us! Or, if you need to install or replace a new heating system, our friendly sales team is glad to assist you in finding the perfect home comfort system that best meets your needs as well as your budget!

What are you doing to help humidify your home this winter?
With the winter months comes colder temperatures, and colder air outside means drier air inside.
A whole home humidifier installed in your home can help:
✅Reduce the spread of cold and flu viruses
✅Lessen static electricity
✅Prevent itchy dry skin and sore throats
✅Protects hardwood floors and wood furnishings from cracking
Our Honeywell Whole House Humidifiers start at $399!

Protect Your HVAC Unit from Snow & Ice Storms
Here are our top tips to help you keep your heat this winter.
1. Perform a Visual Inspection of Surrounding Area
Make sure that there is no extra build up around the vents for your home heating system. This will allow for the safe and proper operation of your equipment.
2. Change Out Air Filters
It’s more important than ever to change out your air filters at least once every three months. Your HVAC unit is working extra hard to transfer heat throughout your home and having clean filters will mean less work for your furnace and increased airflow.
3. Prevention is Key
Make sure you’ve had your annual furnace tune-up performed by a Moeller certified technician. While we offer 24/7 emergency repair, ensuring your furnace is in good working order before the cold weather hits is the most cost-effective course of action.
Give us a call today!
PREPARATION FOR SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES
Sounds like we will experience sub-zero temperatures and wind chills that our homes’ heating systems are NOT designed to handle. -20 to -30 degree temperatures with wind chills into -40 and up to -50+.
Newer homes will struggle to maintain temperature and older homes will NOT maintain temperature and the temperature WILL drop while the heating system is working at full capacity.
FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO PREPARE
Please raise the temperature in your home 2 to 4 degrees above your normal setting.
Take all programmable thermostats out of setback mode and set on a permanent HOLD.
If you have a furnace; replace the filter.
Keep garage doors closed.
Limit opening exterior doors.
Make sure air vents s are not blocked or obstructed.
Close all curtains and blinds to help hold the heat in and stop drafts. Seal all leaking windows and doors.
If you have a 90%+ furnace: You must keep the intake and exhaust clear of ice and snow. During these cold temperatures, ice can build up. A 90%+ furnace has white PVC pipes; an exhaust pipe and an intake pipe that are generally on the side or back of your home. In some instances, they are on your roof, do NOT go on your roof to clear the pipe. Make sure to clear the snow off of your Gas Regulator as well.
OTHER TIPS AND INFORMATION
If the temperature in your home is dropping and you have HOT air coming out of your vents DO NOT PANIC. Please make sure that your heating system continues to operate.
If the temperatures drop in your home, it will not be able to recover until sub-zero temperatures rise and the windchill diminishes. Our heating systems cannot overcome temperatures -20 to -30 with wind chill up to -50+. Put your thermostat on hold 70 degrees or higher. Furnaces in our climate are designed to maintain 72 degrees at -5 below zero and does not include windchill and infiltration.
To help minimize temperature loss you can boil water, make soup, or stews; they help introduce humidity and warmer temperatures into your home. DO NOT USE YOUR OVEN or a GRILL TO HEAT YOUR HOME. Please check on neighbors and elderly residents during these extreme temperatures. Stay warm and safe this week and share this information with friends and family.
The key is do NOT panic with falling temps inside your home if you have heat coming out of your registers. It is doing all it can.
Reminder never run your car to warm up in your garage even if the garage door is open it is unsafe.
Stay safe, Stay warm and bring your pets inside.
Sounds like some bitter cold temps this weekend!
HVAC Tips to Survive Extremely Cold Temperatures
Extreme Cold HVAC Tip #1.
Drop Your Thermostat a Few Degrees: By dropping your thermostat from your currently desired level by 3-5 degrees this will allow your furnace to not work as hard as it currently is to keep your home warm. With the average household keeping their furnace set in the high 60’s and low 70’s, dropping your thermostat 3-5 degrees will be a rather unnoticeable change that will help keep your furnace running.
Extreme Cold HVAC Tip #2.
Check Your Furnace Filters: Just to remind everyone, regardless of what time of the year it is, everyone should be replacing their furnace filter at least once a month, depending on the type of filter, to prevent buildup of debris and making your furnace run harder than necessary. However, during extremely cold times, your furnace will be running longer than usual which could cause there to be more debris than usual that builds up on your filter. You may have to replace your furnace filter more than once a month during extended periods of cold weather. We highly recommend keeping an eye on your furnace filter to make sure that it isn’t dirty on a daily basis during periods of extremely cold temperatures.
Extreme Cold HVAC Tip #3.
Keep All Exhaust Vents Clear: It is very important to understand how your furnace’s exhaust is vented. A great example is that of 90% or more efficiency furnaces. 90% or more efficiency furnaces are mostly vented through PVC pipe where it exits your home outside shortly above ground level. It is very important to check and see if that area is clear of snow and ice, otherwise the buildup will block the exhaust and cause your furnace to not function properly.
Extreme Cold HVAC Tip #4.
Your Furnace May Still Not Warm Normally: It is entirely possible that your furnace may not be able to get your home’s temperature raised to your desired temperature on your thermostat. We would like to advise you that if this is the case, please use space heaters as a last resort as there are several safety concerns about their use. If your furnace is not warming to your desired temperature, please contact us for all your HVAC needs.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds visited Webster County Health Department's second dose mass vaccination clinic this morning to see firsthand the process and efficiency of WCHD's clinics.
"Incredible!" said Reynolds. "The organization, the collaboration, the coordination, the way that people come in, the way the pods are set up, people never have to leave their chair….This clinic is standing out as a great example of a county that is ready to go and doing a great job. I think they said just get us the vaccine and we're ready to go.”
