Foam rolling can be an incredibly useful practice that can create short term improvements in muscle tightness and range of motion. These improvements are due to neurophysiological effects which allow you to increase your tolerance to stretch for a short period of time. Foam rolling does not 'break up adhesions' or release fascia. So why foam roll in the first place if the effects are temporary? If you use the window of time after foam rolling to load the body or joint in the improved range of motion, you can create longer-term changes. Foam rolling in isolation is unlikely to produce any real lasting change, but using foam rolling as part of an overall program can. Foam rolling + dynamic stretching + loading in new ranges of motion = long term change and improvement. In this video, I cover the fundamentals of foam rolling as well as a full-body routine.
Earlier this week as part of the Alliance for Headache Disorders Advocacy, I participated in Headache on the Hill (HOH). This annual event (usually in D.C., but this year virtually) unites patients, health professionals, and advocates to present our “asks” of Congress. . This year we asked our Members of Congress to support a much-needed expansion of the VA Headache Centers of Excellence (HCoE). These locations provide US veterans with a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of #Migraine, #ClusterHeadache, and other #HeadacheDisorders. Unfortunately, too many of the millions of veterans in need of this specialized care live too far from an existing HCoE to receive this specialized care. . We also asked our Members of Congress to support increased funding for the National Institute of Health headache disorders research. Research funding for migraine and headache disorders has stagnated and this leaves us with an incomplete understanding of the condition and inadequate treatments. . I was honored to have the opportunity to meet with @senatortester @stevedaines @reprosendale from Montana and Senator Inhofe @senatorlankford Rep. @markwaynemullin from Oklahoma . . . . . #hoh2021
Many things that are diagnosed on imaging appear to be present in a large number of people without pain as well. In this study, 52% of 30-year-olds had disc degeneration (and had no pain or loss of function). And the percentage went up with each decade of life. . This means we might need to reframe our thinking about degenerative discs from things like 'painful' and 'deteriorating', to 'normal' and 'typical'. What if you thought of these changes as 'wrinkles on the inside' or 'gray hairs of the spine'? It would probably be much less concerning and worrisome, right? . Questions? DM me, I'm happy to answer. . Brinjikji, et. al. Systematic Literature Review of Imaging Features of Spinal Degeneration in Asymptomatic Populations. Don’t confuse patience for laziness. You still have to put in the time and do the work. Just don’t be too hard on yourself when things take a little longer than expected. If you’re anything like me, you have extremely high expectations for yourself and get frustrated when you’re not accomplishing the goals you've set for yourself. Well, the fact of the matter is, things just take time. . This also applies to recovering from an injury. The quick fix rarely works – Rushing your body and sending it back out into the world without proper healing will only increase the chances of further injury and prolonged pain. This often happens when medication is used to mask symptoms and when the underlying issue is ignored. It can become a vicious cycle, but one that can be broken with the correct care. . You can’t rush something you want to last forever, so remember to practice your patience. . . . . . . . #patience #patiencecanbeaction #patienceisavirtue #patienceisavirtueidonthave
