The Montessori Network of New Mexico is taking nominations for the Bretta Weiss Award for Montessori Teaching Excellence through October 30. Bretta Weiss is an AMS Living Legacy, the MNNM Vice President, and a current Board member Montessori of the Rio Grande Charter School. We are pleased to honor her as we recognize superior practitioners and celebrate accomplishments in her name. Bretta’s contributions to Montessori education since the 1960s have helped transform education, access and training for educators, students and families. This annual award recognition elevates the profession, expands what a Montessori teacher looks like, celebrates the unique and diverse people who advocate for Montessori education, acknowledges extraordinary people, and recognizes the notable contributions to the profession. If you would like to nominate a teacher, administrator or school you can do so at the Network website https://nmmontessori.org/the-bretta-weiss-award (photo Dr. Bonnie Dodge, 2015 recipient)

Kellie Nickerson October 18 at 6:15 PM · I find this so helpful and I hope others do as well!
Lisa Bennett Matkin October 12 at 7:08 PM · In honor of Indigenous Peoples Day I want to say thank you to the for one of the most inspiring stories I have ever heard. When I heard it I asked my self how could I have gone my whole life and not known this story! I was introduced to it by John Stokes of the Tracking Project and when it was told by him I would always be moved to tears. Such a powerful message so relevant at this very moment in time. I found this book which is a shorten version of this great story perfect for younger kids... but I love it too! “Robbie Robertson learned the story of Hiawatha and his spiritual guide, the Peacemaker, as part of the Iroquois oral tradition. Now he shares the same gift of storytelling with a new generation. Hiawatha was a strong and articulate Mohawkwho was chosen to translate the Peacemaker’s message of unity for the warring Iroquois nations during the 14th century. This message not only succeeded in uniting the tribes but also forever changed how the Iroquois governed themselves—a blueprint for democracy that would later inspire the authors of the U.S. Constitution.”
Learning about the sensory system is so important to compassionate parenting and teaching and supporting healthy human development. Sensory Processing. What Does it Mean? Sensory processing is what makes it possible for a child to use the sensory input he/she is receiving from their body and environment in a functional, adaptive manner. Effective sensory processing is necessary for almost every activity a child performs. We must be able to integrate the information we receive from all our senses to understand our surroundings successfully. A child with sensory processing concerns has difficulty using sensory input from his/her eyes (vision), ears (sound), skin (touch), nose (smell), mouth (taste), muscles and body joints (body awareness), and inner ear (balance & position of body in space). 📸 @toolstogrow

From Kir and Lisa, our Drama Team: As all of the teachers have modified to online, you have to celebrate the magical, “it worked” moments!!!! On Friday our 4th and 5th graders, had been doing puppet theater, and they blew us away with their online performances in Drama class!!! The prompt was to create a new holiday with Potato characters (based off of a story we made up called Potatoween) the key was that holidays were different this year due to the potato flu, and how would their potato families still celebrate safely! Let’s just say that these amazing kidos not only created masterpieces in their stories and puppet creations, but they cathartically spoke up about how their characters felt about COVID and how to stay connected as a family!!! So proud of these students🌈✨💗 @kirness_ @muse4some @juliaannhayes
Wishing our friends a very warm and happy Diwali!
