We appreciate the inquiries about when the COVID-19 vaccine will be available. The South Dakota Department of Health is allocating the COVID-19 vaccine supplies statewide.
At this time, the state has assigned Sanford Health, Avera Health and Monument Health the task of storing the vaccine and administering it to the Phase 1A group of healthcare and long-term care workers in their areas. The DOH will also direct Monument Health in the distribution of vaccine in later phases.
State DOH is in charge of determining when other groups will receive the vaccine. The Department of Health has created this infographic that outlines the priority groups in Phase 1.
We recommend that independent health care providers, school officials, other professionals, and individual residents continue to pay attention to communications from the Department of Health and Monument Health for more information as it becomes available.

Congratulations to Cheryl Kiel, a Support Specialist at Monument Health Spearfish Hospital, who retired on March 20, after 32 years of service. Cheryl has done a lot of things in her time at Spearfish Hospital, starting in Housekeeping, moving to Purchasing, then to the Emergency Department before finally finding her place in Medical Imaging.
Cheryl has seen plenty of changes during her career. The technology has evolved, scheduling has gone digital and her daughter — in sixth grade when Cheryl started working at Spearfish Hospital — now works in admissions in the very same hospital.
Now that she’s retired, Cheryl is happy to no longer be on a schedule, and looks forward to sitting in her living room watching snowfall knowing that there’s nowhere she has to go.
Congratulations again Cheryl, we appreciate all your years of service, and know that your team is going to miss you.
