Sturgis RN, Holly Christianson (center), her mother, Georgia Byram (left) and daughter, Glory Christianson (right), a PCC in Sturgis, have created a new Thanksgiving tradition. For three years, they have organized a Turkey Tote raffle for Sturgis caregivers. Holly and her family purchase everything for a Thanksgiving dinner including a turkey, ham and all the fixings to make side dishes and drinks, as well as something fun like table decorations or a game. The twist is that caregivers can purchase raffle tickets for another caregiver, but not themselves. This year they were able to raise $300 from the Turkey Tote raffle. The funds benefit the Sturgis Meals on Wheels program.

Illness or injury can strike suddenly. When these situations occur, we’re often faced with uncertainty about where to go for care, especially if the symptoms seem severe and our regular doctor’s office is closed. While the answer is not always simple, knowing the difference between urgent care and emergency care and where to seek treatment could save your life in a medical emergency. monument.health/options

We appreciate the inquiries about when the COVID-19 vaccine will be available. The South Dakota Department of Health is allocating the COVID-19 vaccine supplies statewide. At this time, the state has assigned Sanford Health, Avera Health and Monument Health the task of storing the vaccine and administering it to the Phase 1A group of healthcare and long-term care workers in their areas. The DOH will also direct Monument Health in the distribution of vaccine in later phases. State DOH is in charge of determining when other groups will receive the vaccine. The Department of Health has created this infographic that outlines the priority groups in Phase 1. We recommend that independent health care providers, school officials, other professionals, and individual residents continue to pay attention to communications from the Department of Health and Monument Health for more information as it becomes available. www.monument.health/covid-19-south-dakota/covid-19-vaccine/
