On the topic of 'Mandated pre-sports EKG screening feasible, effective in young athletes', Robert H. Pass, MD, chief of pediatric cardiology and co-director of the Mount Sinai Kravis Children's Heart Center said "there are some concerns that the use of an ECG in a widespread manner prior to sports could become very costly and yield false-positive findings. Remember also, people who die suddenly from cardiovascular disease do not do so only during sports and so it is false to suggest that only athletes should be screened in some manner for this rare problem of prevention of sudden cardiac death." The Mount Sinai Parenting Center's Tip of the Week: Positive opposites are a concept you can discuss, model or praise in well-child visits. Every unwanted behavior has a positive opposite! By replacing "don't" with "please do," you can think of yourself as helping a child learn how to behave - not just tell them what not to do. And, you are giving them the opportunity to practice following directions and self-regulation skills. So, next time you feel like saying, "Don't play with the otoscope," you can try out, "Please put the otoscope back on the wall so I can use it later. Look, when you scrunch the exam paper, it makes such a crunchy sound! You can try it too!" Reserving negative words like "don't" and "stop" for situations when children are truly in danger, also improves the likelihood that they will listen when they need to most. The Mount Sinai Parenting Center's 'Tip of the Week': Many families will complain about a witching hour - a time in the late afternoon/early evening where their baby is crying, fussy and difficult to soothe. When a baby is overtired, their body - like ours - produces a variety of hormones to stay awake, and once a baby has these elevated levels, they are more difficult to soothe to sleep and more likely to have episodes of intense crying. By the time this happens, parents have missed the sleep window and accumulated sleep debt can have an impact on schedules and behavior. To learn the most helpful suggestions you can make to families to manage the witching hour and set themselves up for night time success: https://bit.ly/3oasUxI PARENTING.MOUNTSINAI.ORG Blog – Mount Sinai Parenting Center

2 years ago, doctors at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital performed a ‘medical miracle’ on Lexi. Born without a bladder and with both kidneys blocked, she first underwent surgery at age six so doctors could create an artificial bladder. In January 2019, she received a kidney transplant, with her father as the donor. Today, Lexi is doing great! Luther, Lexi’s father and kidney donor, said, “Donating my kidney was the greatest thing I've done because nothing has given me more joy than watching Lexi grow and laugh and develop as a healthy, happy, and strong young lady with a long life ahead of her with the support of her mother, sister, and medical team.“ Hilary Hotchkiss, MD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Nephrology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, said “Lexi has come a long way, and at each step, she has been incredibly brave. With help from her parents, Lexi makes sure she takes her medicine every day to keep her transplant kidney healthy.”

Patti Murin, best known for her role as Princess Anna in the Broadway musical adaptation of Disney’s “Frozen", was diagnosed with the coronavirus in April – while also six months pregnant. About halfway through Murin’s pregnancy, she and her husband Colin, learned their baby had a hole in her heart and would require surgery to survive. Their daughter Cecily was born in July, and had open-heart surgery at just 10 weeks old. According to pediatric cardiologist Miwa Geiger, MD, who has been overseeing Murin and Cecily’s care at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Heart Center, congenital heart defects occur in 0.8% to 1% in all pregnancies, and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), is the most common defect that can be detected before birth. Mount Sinai researchers have raised concerns about significant exposure to marijuana secondhand smoke in New York City apartments. Data from a new study suggesting nearly one third of families smell marijuana smoke when their children are present raises concerns about the potential impact of legalized marijuana on vulnerable populations, particularly children, according to the researchers. “As we move towards the legalization of recreational marijuana in New York State, this study serves as a warning that our most vulnerable patient populations who live in multi-use housing will likely experience much higher levels of smoke incursions unless we are intentional about regulating exposure, particularly among children,” says Dr. Wilson, who is also Vice Chair for Clinical and Translational Research for the Jack and Lucy Clark Department of Pediatrics at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Today, we celebrated a major milestone reflecting Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital’s commitment to quality and safety for our patients. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) has gone a year without any unplanned extubations, thanks to our dedicated staff. “Preventing unplanned extubation in the pediatric intensive care unit is achieved with a multidisciplinary approach and collaboration of clinicians,” says Juliana Guiney, Nurse Manager, PICU and PCICU at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital. “ For our patients and their families, being intubated is traumatic, as it is but to be intubated a second is even harder. This goal reflects a decrease in patients needing to be intubated a second time during their admission. Thanks to the amazing multidisciplinary team approach between doctors, registered nurses and respiratory therapists, we have succeeded one year of improved patient safety within the PICU. Mount Sinai Parenting Center's 'Tip of the Week': Feeling unsure about how to promote development in a visit with a 5 year old?...That's just because you haven't mastered this skill...YET! Try including a little something about the #growthmindset in your 5 year well-visit! You can explain to families that a growth mindset is the belief that people can get better at things based on the strategies and the effort they put in. You can model praising a growth mindset when giving vaccines. You can suggest a child use strategies to help them get through a painful procedure, and even if there are tears, you can remark, "that was difficult to be brave while you got your vaccine, and I could tell you were trying really hard to distract yourself by counting during the shot. Trying to do hard things actually helps your brain grow. Great job trying to be brave and growing your brain!"
