The following is not intended for legal advice and is an exert from the ACLU.
You have the right to remain silent. If you wish to exercise that right, say so out loud.
You have the right to refuse to consent to a search of yourself, your car or your home.
If you are not under arrest, you have the right to calmly leave. Ask the police for permission then leave peacefully.
You have the right to a lawyer if you are arrested. Ask for one immediately.
Regardless of your immigration or citizenship status, you have constitutional rights.
What is the difference between a bail and a bond?
When the defendant is initially arraigned the judge will typically set a bail. The bail can be paid directly to the jail in order to ensure the defendants release. Once the case is disposed, the bail is refunded less county fees. If the bail amount is difficult to pay, then a bail bondsman may be used to post the bond. In this case approximately 10% of the bail amount is paid to the bondsman in order to post the bond. Funds paid to a bail bondsman are non-refundable.
