A cold front will push into central Illinois on Monday, and will be a focus for scattered thunderstorms. The front is expected to push back north as a warm front during the evening, continuing the chance for strong storms across parts of the area. A few of the storms could be severe during the afternoon and evening, with damaging wind gusts being the main threat. Frequent lightning and locally heavy rain are also possible.

Occasional showers and thunderstorms will affect central Illinois the next several days. Some of those storms may be severe this morning from I-74 northward, as well as this evening, mainly late. Additional strong to severe thunderstorms may develop especially Labor Day afternoon. Temperatures will be quite warm today, with highs 85 to 88 degrees, then temperatures will slowly trend downward the remainder of the week especially areas west of I-55 where highs are expected to decrease to the mid to upper 60s by Thursday.

There remains a threat of severe weather Friday night, as a cold front moves into Illinois. The best chances will be across eastern Iowa into northern Illinois. Here in central Illinois, scattered severe storms are possible (level "2" on a scale of 1-5), but by the time the storms reach as far south as Springfield and Mattoon, they should be in a weaker state. Damaging winds and large hail are the main concerns.

3 pm Update:
We're looking at a couple periods where we may see some strong to locally severe storms (level "1" on a scale of 1-5). The first will be after midnight and lingering into Monday morning. After that, another round of strong storms is possible very late Monday afternoon into the evening. In both periods, the concern is with locally damaging wind gusts. There is also potential for heavy rain with the storms, which would lead to localized ponding of water in some areas.

Very warm temperatures will continue today, then a cooling trend will take place into the weekend returning temperatures back below normal for a few days. Highs should be in the mid 80s today, decreasing to the lower 70s by Saturday. Occasional scattered thunderstorms can be expected through Thursday night or Friday, then mostly clear skies should ensue for the weekend. Although there will be plenty of chances for rain, there should be plenty of dry hours each day as well.
It's been 3 years overdue but finally made it happen. It definitely is far from complete but it's a start.
I hope everyone can appreciate the expenditure.
Get ready to hunker down.

The WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY has been extended to include all locations along and north of a Macomb to Bloomington line. Rain will change to a period of wet snow this afternoon into early this evening before quickly coming to an end. Snowfall totals will generally be around 1 inch in the ADVISORY area, but will be as high as 1 to 2 inches along and north of a Macomb to Minonk line...including the communities of Galesburg and Lacon. As west-northwest winds increase and gust as high as 35 to 45 mph, areas of blowing snow may reduce visibilities and drift across untreated secondary and rural roads. Motorists are advised to drive with caution and to be prepared for snow-covered or slick roadways.
I found this informative and thought I'd put it on our page:
For those who are going through propane like crazy right now, here is a fix I used to make my usage more efficient.
Problem: Propane cylinders have a harder time vaporizing propane the colder they get so you end up using more propane because of less efficient vaporization. (See chart) you can see this by your cylinders getting iced up, eventually your regulator will ice up and propane will stop flowing until it thaws (real cold climates experience this even in house propane tanks)
Fix: I added a propane heating blanket to keep the tank at 85 degrees and help with vaporization.
The results: before the heating blanket I was going through 7.2 Gallons of propane every 4 days with outside Temps of 33-50 degrees
With the Blanket I am now going through 7.2 gallons every 9 days with the same outside Temps. This more than doubled my efficiency and only added 100 watts of power
Yes the Blankets are safe. At 120v and 1A they are low draw, temperature regulated (probes sit on the tank not outside air temp) and cord is long enough to stay out of the propane enclosure.
I got only 1 blanket for the tank in use, and I swap it over to the other tank when my regulator swaps over, didn't see a need to spend another $130 to test, or heat a tank not in use. Bought from Northern tool, and used an additional $20 off coupon code 271099. So it came out to 119.99 for the heater.
Hope this helps!
