For 3 flutes, piano and bass:
The midnight spinning wheel
It´s a very fresh composition. I wrote it yesterday midnight. Actually, I was just about to go to sleep when this melody came up. A harmless mordent ... and that's what happened. A kind of canon for 3 flutes in the merry folk style.
It´s a play along music for you. The second video is without first flute. Try it 🙂 You can copy and print the parts from here.
The beautiful engraving is from Fr. Welcome (Wikimedia).

After learning about the cancellation of the 2020 NFA Convention, composer Amanda Harberg conceived of The Prayer Project. The piece, originally written in 2011, was created as a prayer for her mother’s recovery from a serious illness. Harberg’s goal in arranging Prayer for virtual flute orchestra was to uplift and bring friends and collaborators together through the performance and creation of this meditation on healing. The Prayer Project features more than 90 flutists from around the world (including many NFA members), alongside harp and percussion, and was conducted by Maestra JoAnn Falletta and produced and edited by filmmaker Micah Fink.

December 15 at 1:48 PM ·
Tip of the Day: "Flutists like everyone else wage a battle with time. With the turn of the New Year, resolutions are made, “I will practice every day. I will play scales and long tones. I will learn all the Andersen Etudes. I will memorize the Mozart Concerti. Etc, etc, etc.” Let’s be realistic. Are you really going to have more time this month to practice than last? Probably not. So, the resolution should be, “I am going to practice smarter.”
Smarter practice means you creatively organize practice sessions, plucking minutes here and there throughout the day, and when busy, select only the essential exercises to keep your playing in tiptop shape (maintenance practice)." Patricia George, The Teacher's Studio, Flute Talk Magazine, January 2012.

Tip of the Day: "What is your basic curriculum for a performance or music education major for the BM program?
Basic goals include mastery of the fundamentals and pedagogy of flute playing. This includes rhythm, body mapping, breathing, tone, vibrato, articulation, finger technique, legato, phrasing and sightreading. Every graduating flutist also should have a working knowledge of the standard flute repertoire including chamber, orchestral and band works. Students should have a strong background historically and be familiar with the primary sources related to the flute’s history and performance style practices. They should learn and perform works from all style periods including learning contemporary techniques and should have performing experiences in chamber music and in flute choir. I also encourage students to explore entrepreneurial issues so they will find employment in the future. Flute alums come back to campus to share their real life experiences with current students.
For example, with first year students, I assign studies and etudes by Taffanel & Gaubert, Maquarre, Moyse, Filas, Colin, Andersen, Berbiguier, Hugues and Kohler. Repertoire may include: Bach Sonata in Eb, Bloch Suite Modale, Busser Prelude et Scherzo, Chaminade Concertino, Debussy Syrinx, Delibes/Massenet Three Original Pieces, Doppler Fantaisie Pastorale Hongrouise, Gaubert Madrigal, Griffes Poem, Hindemith Sonate, Honegger Danse de la Chevre, Hoover Kokopeli/Winter Spirits, Ibert Aria, Koechlin Fourteen Pieces, Molique Andante, Mozart Andante in C, Pergolesi Concerto in G, Stamitz Concerto in G, Telemann Suite in A Minor, Telemann Sonatas in F and G Major, and Whear Five Haiku plus standard orchestral excerpts." Tip of the Day: "Some students seem to lack the ability to sense a steady rhythmic pulse. One theory is that they may have spent too much time the first year of their lives in an infant seat rather than being carried next to the mother’s heart. Whether this is true or not, the problem exists. The following exercises can help students feel a steady beat.
Pendulum Exercises
• Rock in a rocking chair concentrating on how far forward and back each cycle is. Use the metronome clicking on the forward or back position turning point.
• Jump rope and swing the rope at varying tempos. The metronome can also be used with this exercise.
• Roll a ball to a partner in time with a metronome. Early childhood researchers have said that a ball is the best toy for a child. In Montessori classes, I observed young children rolling a ball back in forth in time with the music. They soon discovered that the faster the music went, the closer they had to be to one another. Tennis players are instructed to bounce the ball a few times before they serve. A tennis teacher told me this was to get the rhythm of the ball in my head before I served."
