Amelogenesis Imperfecta: What is it?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is a congenital disorder which has an abnormal formation of the outside layer of the enamel. Amelogenesis imperfecta is due to the malfunction of the proteins in the enamel as a result of abnormal enamel formation. This condition leads to higher incidence of cavities due to the rough nature of the enamel.

Shelby presented to me with her mom from the Bahamas for a solution for her. Her teeth had an abnormal yellowish brownish color. Her demeanor was quiet, shy and made no eye contact with me. She spoke about school and I knew inside how self-conscious she was about her smile. A basic smile uses 10 muscles. A confident broad smile uses 17 muscles. Shelby had a very basic smile and was trying not to expose too much teeth. Just like any muscle in our body, if certain muscles are not used then over time, the shape of the face changes!

At that point, it made me think about the impact that dentistry can make on this beautiful, young girl. It was a honor to treat this sweet girl so we can develop good hygiene habits early on, give her the confidence she needed in school, in her relationships, career and in herself.

This has been an interesting year for sure for us all! It came with it’s own set of challenges which certainly no one was prepared for. My motto in life and something which I learned very early on is keep moving on during times of adversity. “Change is your friend not your foe; change is a brilliant opportunity to grow” --- Simon T. Bailey. That is exactly what we did!
Despite being closed for several months due to this pandemic, I chose to to use this time wisely.
First and foremost, family time became very special making TikTok videos, new recipes, etc.
On the professional side, with time on my side, I must have done over 200 hundred hours of education since the pandemic started. Even though I have been practicing for over 22 years, I believe there is more to learn. The first investment I made was to enroll with @speareducation. I have been following this company since the first wave of the pandemic and noticed how they were guiding their doctors with helping patients during the closure and their messaging resonated with me. Like me, Spear believes in patient education which to me is priceless and is the cornerstone of being a doctor. The original word doctor in Latin means, ‘teacher’, and how better to serve our patients with the proper education that we have to spread the word.
Whether someone needs an education on proper brushing/flossing to help preserve their teeth, it is an honor everyday to provide education to our patients. We discuss the risks and benefits of all procedures providing many options. The patient can then make an informed decision on their overall health.
This is the second year in a row that we had the honor to win the “Neighborhood Favorite”award! We are truly grateful for achieving this award and our promise is to continue to be committed to delivering excellent care!

🦷 Dental Anatomy 101 🦷
🦠 Bacterias cause two main infections in the mouth.
1. Dental Decay or cavity is a bacterial infection that can start anywhere around the tooth. If left untreated, it will continue to grow from the enamel (outer hardest substance in your body) to the dentin (softer second layer) down into the pulp where the nerve lies and can cause major TOOTHACHE! Take care of cavities when they are small because it preserves your enamel.
2. Periodontal Disease: Infection of the gums. Plaque, a sticky invisible bacterial layer around the gum and bone, if unremoved calcifies around the root called TARTAR. This infection will continue to destroy the gum and bone and if left untreated will lead to TOOTH LOSS due to lack of bone support.
📆 Annual exams and digital xrays are super important to check for these infections.

🦷Teeth Wear🦷
The structure of your teeth can be reduced due to forces placed upon them. Enamel is worn away due to clenching or grinding either in your sleep or during the day. Another way teeth wear down is due to erosion from drinking sugary acidic drinks. Lastly, a medical condition like acid reflux or bulimia where over time the hard outer layer of enamel dissolved and exposes the softer dentin layer making it more susceptible to decay.
In this particular case, patient just wanted to improve the look of his bottom front teeth. Using the @cerecbydentsplysirona technology all the crowns were made in the office with custom staining to match the color with his natural enamel.

"I had put off taking care of my dental problems for many years even though I understood the serious health risks. But an over powering phobia kept me from even making contact with the Dentist - even for the consultation!
Then finally I decided to reach out to “My Dentist For Life”. Dr. Saba Rizvi and her team were so caring, patient and understanding. After discussing my situation, concerns and options, I committed to going forward and taking a care of my mouth.
Although the consultation and all the provided information eased my anxiety somewhat, I was still so worried about the surgery.
Dr. Rizvi performed the surgery with absolutely no pain. And I walked out with a new set of temp-teeth. Why didn’t I do this before!
