Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)
Sharing from colleagues Dr. Shalini Kapoor and Dr. Carolyn Iacullo Nygaard
I’ve been getting a lot of questions about COVID19 thought I would share this.
CORONAVIRUS: from a colleague Shalini Kapoor ( I updated figures to reflect changing numbers and added some content for general treatment recommendations )
"Coronavirus/COVID 19
Patients are asking in person, by phone calls and emails about what they can do to prevent and be prepared for coronavirus should it become a pandemic and make itself prominent here in the US. So this is an information filled update on what is going on, how to prevent, treat and stay ahead of the emerging potential pandemic.
A bit about Coronavirus: You might be surprised to hear that Coronavirus is not entirely a new virus. Historically, they have been seen before. Known as one of the common causes of the flu globally COVID19 is resonant of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and MERS (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome). Just to put things in perspective, the annual seasonal flu (2019-2020) has so far infected infected 20 million Americans At this point panic is unnecessary but preparedness and prophylactic measures are imperative.
Fatality rate of COVID 19 is about 0.7-4% so far depending on severity of cases. When SARS was seen to cause a mortality rate of 10% and the seasonal flu is about 0.1%. So it is not a death sentence. It can certainly become a pandemic and since infectious pathogens don’t know boundaries it can be said that everyone is ultimately susceptible. Incubation time can be upward of 7 to 10 days. Coronavirus has an affinity for lower lungs and pneumonia. Typically viruses can mutate but luckily the COVID virus is not exactly mutating. While we are still learning about this virus, we know how to prevent the spread
--Coming in contact with droplets from a sick person is transmission. WASHING HANDS (for at least 20 seconds) is most effective. Teach your school and college going children to do the same. Even hand sanitizers, which I don’t routinely recommend is better than nothing at all.
--Get adequate rest and sleep
-- If you have symptoms of fever, cough, body aches, stay in (self quarantine) especially if you have travelled from a place where COVID -19 has made its presence. Keep yourself separate from other family members. Sanitize surfaces you may have touched with antimicrobial wet wipes. (Though surface contact does not seem to be the main vector for COVID unlike the flu and other viruses.)
--Eat easily digestible healthy food full of fruits and vegetables
--Strengthen your immune system! Herbs and nutraceuticals have a robust antiviraL ability. Things like Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Elderberry, Colloidal Silver spray, herbs like Andrographis paniculata, Tinospora cordifolia, Embilica Officinalis, Terminalia chebula, Zingiber, Holy basil, Black pepper, Garlic/Allicin, Astragalus. Mushroom complexes like reishi, cordyceps, maitaki, shiitake, etc. Chinese medicine herbs can be very effective as well!
(If you want more specific brands, dosages and specific available formulas, please call a local Naturopath or Acupuncturist who focuses on herbal medicine)
— Antibiotics and steroids are not effective. Antibiotics are for bacterial infections only, and steroids weaken the immune system making viruses replicate more effectively and more damaging to the body.
--Keep abreast on the latest on the Coronavirus on WHO and CDC’s website and on travel bans etc. use science based news findings and try not to spread hysteria with biased social media outlets.
— Racial profilings and propagating hysteria are not helpful. This virus is no more virulent than the flu. Please remember that.
--Masks? Are they effective? Yes masks like N95 are but they are cumbersome to wear. Masks you see people wearing at airports, busy places are not as effective. Having said that wearing masks is a good gesture to the community around that you are a concerned member of the society and you are doing your bit by not spreading the virus.
Testing for COVID 19: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed a test to diagnose COVID-19 in respiratory and serum samples from clinical specimens. Your doctor can do a test for the flu as well. Since this is more likely to be positive, it is a good place to start.
Talk to your doctor if you have symptoms of fever, cough, shortness of breath etc.
Progression to pneumonia in people with COPD", other lung diseases and compromised immune systems.
PM if you have further questions.
The study suggests that the associated increase in GABA levels after a yoga session are ‘time-limited’ similar to that of pharmacologic treatments such that completing one session of yoga per week may maintain elevated levels of GABA,” explained corresponding author Chris Streeter, MD, associate professor of psychiatry at BUSM
