Look closely at the crabs in the mud. These are Green Porcelain Crabs. These are an invasive species. First introduced in the 1930's through ship ballast water into Florida, these crabs have been working their way north. This buffer zone offers not only storm protection, it is also an amazing habitat for migratory songbirds. Awesome find! Congratulations to naturalist, Tess Moody, on finding this new species of millipede. Tess, a former member of the Nature Adventures team, had the keen eye and knowledge to realize this was a unique insect. Sending the photo to a professional entomology website prompted a response and the rest is history. The honor of naming the new species is her reward as well as the recognition for the find.

Amid tumultuous year for tourism, Charleston marks decade run of No. 1 city title
Well, after experiencing these extra high tides recently, this story is difficult to believe. Sullivan's Island has been on the receiving end of some of the lost sands from other areas. An amazing maritime forest has resulted and now is a buffer against the sea and wind. Sadly, the town has accepted a mediated decision on nearly clear-cutting the forest. The habitat is critical to migratory birds as well as other species. Yes, there have been coyotes, but the main focus has been views and breezes. Seems like it is counter-intuitive given the state of most local beaches.

This beautiful little beastie is a Velvet Ant. Often called a "cow killer" this isn't even an ant. It is a wingless wasp. The sting is considered one of the most painful of all insects, thus the nickname "cow killer." Definitely one to look but not touch. Have you ever seen one in the Lowcountry?

This Yellow-bellied Slider is a common turtle in the blackwater swamps in the Lowcountry. They like to bask in the sun to dry or warm up on a sunny day. Along-lived reptile, some can live up to 40 years in captivity. Although best left in the wild, these turtles were often kept as pets. Did you have one as a pet?

Not the most common bird to spot on our waterways but White Pelicans can be spotted if you keep a sharp eye. Every once in a while they even visit Shem Creek. They don't plunge dive like our Brown Pelicans. White Pelicans swim and "herd" the fish then snap at them filling their pouches. The forest of The Woodlands Nature Reserve comes to life for a drive-up celebration of light: Illuminated. As you enter The Woodlands Nature Reserve, guests will park vehicles and enjoy an optional stroll through illuminated majestic oaks and longleaf pines. Overlooking Observation Lake is where the real magic happens, featuring laser projections and dynamic lights on the trees and across the water.
Cozy up to the multiple campfires and enjoy a live music session of jazz-rock with Pierce Alexander. Hot chocolate, popcorn, and s'mores for purchase make the night complete. Outdoor activities are spread out and Covid-safe; masks are recommended when exiting vehicles.
Illuminated takes place on Saturdays, December 19th and 26th with gates open from 6-9pm.
Admission for Illuminated is included with any overnight stay, or available for purchase in advance for $15 or at the gate for $20. Passes can be purchased in advance online or at the gate. Advance purchase or electronic payments preferred.
Overnight options include staying in a cozy and stylish Zun tent cabin, the comfort of Casita Annie, or pitching your own tent at a primitive campsite. All sites include lake views and a day pass to enjoy the trails and lakes on Sunday. RV electrical hookup sites also available in Bailey’s Field.

Have you ever seen this "funky chicken"? If you have you are very lucky. This crazy colored bird is a Purple Gallinule. Not often seen here, but pay attention to freshwater marshes with lilypads as the weather warms. It looks like the Common Gallinule only more colorful.

Black Skimmers are amazing birds here at Shem Creek and in the Lowcountry. They may be seen resting on sandbars this time of the year or flying low over the water to trap small fish in their long, two-toned bills. They are one of the most graceful birds on the water. Have you spotted any lately resting on the beach? If so, enjoy the opportunity to watch, but please try not to disturb their rest. #NatureAdventuresCHS #birds

One of the more unique and vulnerable species in South Carolina is the Gopher Tortoise. A large terrestrial reptile that digs a deep and long burrow. The burrow is actually used by other species besides the tortoise. Due to many factors including habitat loss, these interesting creatures face an uncertain future. Standing like a sentinel in the harbor, the Morris Island Lighthouse has a long and storied past. The third such beacon employed on this side of the harbor, the light was built in 1872. Ongoing projects to repair and restore the light are under the guidance of the Save the Light Foundation. Although not accessible from land, the light is prominently positioned in the harbor and easily visible from many points on land or water.

The group was able to spot Woodpeckers, a Loggerhead Shrike, a Bald Eagle and much, much more. There was even an American Woodcock calling from the woods. What would you say if you saw this tiny potato with wings swimming around? Well, if you were like many curious birders from around the state, you would be really excited. This little oddball bird is a rare visitor from the far north. Called a Dovekie, this little Alcid (think same Family as Puffins) wandered down from the North Atlantic for a little fun and sun at Huntington Beach State Park. Obviously it's not just another "snowbird" on a visit South.
