The client, a fashion photographer and magazine editor, wished to make this storefront into a gallery and a working photo studio. While the neighbors with similar apartments had disregarded their basement spaces, here the basement area was renovated by bringing light in through the spiral staircase as well as a glass 'light box' which doubles as a bench beneath the window.
The mezzanine floor is made as thin as possible in order to gain height for a spacious office area behind a translucent glass railing. The office curtain falls down the gap behind the mezzanine slab to the kitchen and bathroom below. The kitchen cabinetry and bedroom closets are combined into one double-height storage element to further unify the space. The loft was published in New York City Time Out in the fall of 2004.
