Sickle cell disease is the most common hereditary blood disorder in the U.S. For those who have it, blood transfusions may be the only relief from excruciating pain associated with the disease—but finding the right match is key. Nebraska Community Blood Bank's Sickle Cell Donor Program uses an extensive typing process to screen donors and match them with patients in need. To learn more, visit NCBB.ORG.
This Friday, our blood drive of the week goes to Nebraska Concerns of Police Survivors and Omaha Police Officers Association who held a blood drive in honor of Lincoln Police Officer Mario Herrera. Officer Herrera was shot in the line of duty and needed many blood transfusions from our local hospitals. 42 generous life-savers came out to give blood in Officer Herrera's honor. Their gifts went to local hospitals that help patients like Officer Herrera every day.
We are overwhelmed at the outpouring of support for Officer Herrera. Our community has turned out in force to help. In fact, 393 first-time donors have started their legacy as life-savers, and 450 donors dedicated Count Me In cards to him!
Donated blood gave Officer Herrera a fighting chance to survive. It helps patients every day who are in need due to injury, illness, cancer treatment, surgery, and more. Thank you to everyone in our community who helps stock the shelves at hospitals today and every day. You're real life-savers.

Interview With Dr. Jed Gorlin to talk about Sickle Cell Awareness Month
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, mobile blood drives were cancelled while the world adjusted to its new normal. That meant 50% of our community's blood donations were put on hold or cancelled. But the need for blood doesn't stop for a pandemic. Today our inventory is dangerously low on all blood types. Can you help bridge the gap? Schedule your appointment at a donor center OR a mobile blood drive—we're taking precautions to keep you and our staff safe during these challenging times. www.ncbbherohub.club or 1-877-486-9414 #TransfusionTuesday #savelives
