Not even after I started New Day Photography and watched it grow. Love for photography was never the issue, I just knew something was missing. Fast forward to February 4th of 2019 and we started New Day Creative. The thing about a good thing…many times you don’t know it’s good until it’s gone. I’m strangely grateful for the humility that life has forced upon me because it’s awoken a mindful and present sense of what is good, when it’s good. Things with New Day are good and not just for the reasons you may think. We’ve had an amazing year growing this business. We’ve exceeded my expectations and for those of you that know me well…you know I can dream big. Here are just a few highlights of our first year. -We’ve worked with numerous non-profits and helped them continue their selfless work -Shot a rebrand commercial for Park National Bank and got to know their amazing team -Branded, consulted on business, and helped launch AXE Social Lounge in Mansfield, Ohio and despite all the doubts, they’re thriving -Shot a documentary for an author. That video has received over 100,000 views -Launched numerous websites -Partnered with the Crawford Partnership and have worked closely with their ridiculously great team on future strategies -We’ve written scripts, had countless studio photoshoots, produced a music video -We’ve had the privilege of seeing businesses grow right before our eyes Honestly that is just a glimpse of the past year for us. I am very proud of all of these accomplishments. The pride that I have in those accomplishments pales in comparison to the pride that I have for the team that we’ve assembled. I get why I didn’t have any clue of what I wanted to be when I grew up. It’s so clear now. It’s the people. Life is about the people that surround you. I’m thankful to God that I’m surrounded by these good people. The kind of people that you know will have your back. When I grow up, I want to be right where I am today, resting in the here and now, recognizing gratefully that I’m surrounded by great people. Thank you to my business partners Scott Drozda and Eric Biddle for legitimately making me a better version of myself. You both know this all falls apart without you. And for the rest of the team…we’re just getting started and I’m thankful for you. Buckle up…2020 is going to be a hell of a year.

When you sit down to eat here, you can choose to travel back in history or discuss the news that is happening today and somehow, it all feels like you’re…home." Jim Smith—Owner, Coney Island Diner The Coney Island Diner is Mansfield's oldest operating restaurant. At its present location since 1936, the diner has been witness to a remarkable timeline of events, from World Wars to global pandemics. In the building itself, not much remains from 1936 except for the original neon sign proudly displayed on the wall, along with the “Air Conditioned” sign which was used to cover up the 5-cent coney cost on the sign when the price for coneys went to 7 cents in 1939. If you have ever been to the diner with its counter stools and upholstered booths, you will certainly experience the one thing almost all patrons describe over and over again—that feeling of being home. A nostalgic throwback that is both classically retro and current, the diner has built its reputation on coneys—a simple hot dog and a very special sauce with onions. There is nothing groundbreaking about a hot dog or coney sauce except to say that when you order this tradition, you step into a realm that countless people have enjoyed for nearly 100 years. The stories from people’s lives that began right here in these booths or at these counter stools are countless. "I asked my girl to marry me right over there" or "I came down here and got a dozen coneys when I got back from Vietnam" or "I was sitting right there when the buildings were attacked on 9/11.” The diner is not your typical place to just go eat a sandwich. When you sit down to eat here, you can choose to travel back in history or discuss the news that is happening today and somehow, it all feels like you’re…home. There is a lot to be said about keeping things simple. The diner has successfully kept it that way for decades, and we’ll continue to do so in the years to come. The product really is central, and we really do spend a lot of time worrying about the quality of the product, however the thing that comes up over and over again in customer feedback is ‘relaxing space, cool people.’ I like that. You can go into many coffee shops that are focussed on high quality products, but come across as pretentious, and I just don’t want that. I don’t want anyone to ever fear that they’ve ordered wrong. This isn’t the “young kids” coffee shop, or the “millennial” coffee shop, or the “Gen Z” coffee shop, it’s the community’s coffee shop. We really get to know our customers. When you come here, we not only know what your drink is, but we really know who you are. Connecting to the art community has been important to us as well, and we have many visual and performing artists who see this space as home. We really aren’t on the way to anywhere, so you have to make a decision that you want to come here because you want what we have - whether it’s the product, the people or the environment - and I think it’s a combination of all three. I wanted the coffee shop to be a central place in the community, and in order to do that we needed to be in the middle. Downtown is where we needed to be, and it has been cool to be a part of the growth of the independent business community over the past 9 years. I began my career in coffee by finding and locating the best coffee shops in the country due to working in a career that required a lot of traveling. When my family ultimately decided that Mansfield had become our home, we decided to go for it - to bring a true, local coffee shop here. This venture has changed me thoroughly and completely. It’s so much more than a job. It really has become a part of our family.

It’s always such a great feeling, helping people to feel better about themselves. We want our clients to feel like a million bucks when they leave. We know our job is complete when people leave here happier.” In so many ways, 2020 has been a such a uniquely challenging year. Homeschooling our kids…grappling with economic uncertainty…being separated from family and friends—a convergence of factors has understandably led to increased amounts of anxiety and stress. Looking in the mirror, many of us can see visible evidence of that stress etched into the worry lines on our faces. Where we might see worry, though, Megan Olson and Jill Borowicz—owners of LuxLife Medspa—see opportunity. Not merely to help clients feel better about themselves, however, but also to make a difference on a larger scale. “Because of COVID, we had to shut down the entire month of April,” Megan explains. “It was difficult, especially being a new business in its first year. But Jill and I both have ER backgrounds, and we saw that the hospitals in New York City were overrun and the nurses were in desperate need of reprieve. So we packed up and went to help with the COVID response, Jill for two months and me for one.” “What was so amazing, though,” Jill says, “was the support we continued to receive from our clients. Care packages and messages of support—our clients have truly become a part of our LuxLife family. We returned from New York more knowledgeable and better prepared to protect both ourselves and our clients.” October marks the one-year anniversary of LuxLife Medspa, and when Jill and Megan reflect on the last year, they’re grateful to have achieved such success despite the challenge of having to close for a month, and they’re happy to have been welcomed so graciously. “Being a part of the downtown community has been great,” Megan says. “We have formed strong relationships with other businesses, and we feel very fortunate to be part of this resurgence that’s taking place here. We’re so thankful for all of our amazing clients whose support helped make our first year so successful. He fell in love with his craft while working in fine dining establishments across the country, honed his skills under award-winning chefs, and has brought his experience back to the deli at Hudson & Essex. "The stuff we do here is the best of both worlds--we are combining affordability with attention to detail and quality," he says. "This is the best job I've had in a long time." Matthew started as a dishwasher at the Van-Deck Smorgasbord when he was 14 years-old and worked his way up in the industry. His travels took him to Philadelphia, where he learned the intricacies of east coast seafood, and Winston-Salem, where he became the lead chef of a fine-dining steakhouse. He got married and moved to North Chicago, where he worked closely with both James Beard and Michelin Star award-winning chefs. Matthew returned to the area to care for family, and eventually landed at Hudson & Essex where he was given the opportunity to reimagine what their deli could be. Matthew's favorite item on the menu is a pastrami sandwich that he says rivals those found in famous New York City Delis. The brisket is brined for six days and smoked for six hours, hand-sliced thin, and served on homemade rye bread. "My pastrami is banging," he says with a laugh. The pastrami isn't the only thing made in-house; Matthew cures the pork belly for the bacon, and roasts the top sirloin and turkey breast. Even the sausage is hand-made, and everything is available for purchase by the pound. Matthew is proud to merge the convenience of a local deli with the fine dining of Hudson & Essex, noting that the steaks served in the restaurant are also available for take-home. "We hand cut steaks every day. We're not buying steaks that have been sitting around." Matthew is working towards a Marketplace-like presence, hoping to soon offer fresh fish for purchase. "My dream is to continue expanding the deli and bring fine-dining quality to the public with grocery-store prices," he says. "I want people to be able to take Hudson & Essex home with them to recreate the experience for someone they love."

I grew up that way - my mother having a career in food as well - so it just continued. Baking was kind of like therapy for me. I just fell in love with baking and it made me happy. When you open a business, you don’t automatically think that you want to partner with someone, but after cooking out of my home for the first year, I kind of ran into the opportunity with Paul Kemerling at Relax, It’s Just Coffee and it just made sense to partner up, so that’s what we decided to do. When customers visit us, my hope is for them to find happiness; that they can come in and just forget about everything for an hour. That they can sit down and have a great scone and a cup of coffee. We have great employees, which is a big part of our success. When customers come in, they are greeted with a cheerful person and are able to have a relaxing time. We know their names, and they know ours - I think that’s my favorite part. It’s nothing pretentious - you don’t have to be anything but yourself. There are a lot of great bakeries around, but we want to be slightly different, add little twists and have different flavor combinations that you wouldn’t normally think of. We try to bring in new flavors as each season comes into play. We are also proud of our growing vegan and gluten free menu! Besides walking into the bakery and seeing what’s in our case each day, we always take custom and bulk orders. This is my first business, and I’ve learned that you don’t have to know everything all at once. You learn as you go, it’s ok to make mistakes and people don’t have everything figured out. Overall, I am a much more grateful person having done this.
