This might be the coolest #TattooTuesday we've ever had. Meet Giulia P. - blood donor, and owner of one epic tattoo. Giulia is O-, and although she hates needles, she got this tattoo as a reminder of just how important it is for her to give blood. O- is the universal donor, and ALWAYS needed. Shout out to Giulia P., and all of our dedicated donors who continue to serve the community by giving blood!

75% of our incoming blood supply has been sacrificed due to the closing of schools and colleges. The challenges associated with virtual vs. in person learning have led to difficulties in creating donation opportunities for our newest and youngest donors: high school students. These students are not only missing out on many high school memories, but on the opportunity to do something that not only helps others, but reminds them that they are part of something bigger. The number of first time donors at our blood drives has decreased significantly, and we need your help to get our communities, especially students, into our donor centers or at one of our community blood drives. Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up about 75% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of blood drives has dropped by two-thirds this year due to the pandemic. The number of blood drives each month has fallen from 500 to an alarmingly low total of 130. We need your help to find locations where we can host blood drives. Pre-pandemic, 550 community blood drives were hosted each month, currently we just have 280 blood drives per month. We have a gap of 8,000 donations per month in our community alone, just 65% of what is needed. High school and college blood drives which brought in 25,000 first time donors each year and a total of 75,000 blood donations have been seriously impacted by the pandemic.

New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Because of COVID-19, we are experiencing a chronic deficit in the blood supply. Area hospitals and academic medical centers, including Catholic Health Services are joining forces with us to increase blood donations.
