National Comic Book Day is a super cool day. Share a comic book with a friend today. We don't know of anyone who doesn't like a good comic book. Comic books are great reading. They either tell an ongoing story, provide humor, or offer intrigue and suspense. In all comic books, good eventually prevails over evil. So, comic books always make us feel good. #newrivercovelife #graphicnovelscount #soontobeamovie
Hobbit Day is today. It is the birthday of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, two of the main hobbit characters from The Lord of the Rings. There also is a Hobbit Week, which occurs on the Sunday through Saturday where Hobbit Day falls. Hobbits are little guys, and little gals, just two to four feet tall. They are our heroes in the Lord of the Ring movies, performing great acts heroism and courage. Notably, Hobbits go around barefoot, and eat seven meals a day. They also like to dance, have parties, and enjoy fireworks. The movie "The Fellowship of the Ring" opened in this manner, celebrating Bilbo Baggins birthday. You can celebrate this special holiday, by going to a Lord of the Rings movie, or reading any of author J.R.R. Tolkien's books that include hobbits. You can hold a Hobbit party.... don't forget the fireworks. You may also chose to walk around barefoot all day. That sounds like fun. As for me, I will celebrate this day enjoying seven meals. #newrivercovelife #secondbreakfast #littlebuttough
Today is National Pepperoni Pizza Day, a day to celebrate America's favorite variety of pizza.. Almost everybody loves pizza. It is so versatile. Pizza is eaten for breakfast (often cold), lunch, dinner and as a late night snack. It is a very popular food for parties and events. You can put all sorts of meats, vegetables, fruits, and even fish... Anchovies... on your pizza. National Play-Doh Day celebrates a great childhood play toy. Invented in the mid 1950s, it has entertained millions of children, and allowed them to express their creativity, both at home and in the classroom. The invention was simple. A school teacher wanted a safe modeling clay for her pre-schoolers. She asked her brother-in-law Joseph McVicker, who worked at a chemical company, to come up with something. The result was simple....flour, water and food coloring. #newrivercovelife #funforallages #whatareyoumaking
Grab your crab baskets and head to the seashore. Or, go to the local seafood store for a mess of crabs. Get out the steamer and start boiling the water. Don't forget to melt some butter. .Ps Don't forget the bibs. Today is International Crab Fest Day, and a lot of crabs are steamed about that! There's two things we know. First, crabs can be found all over the world. Isn't that just wonderful!? Second, crabs are one of the sweetest, most popular of all seafoods. The fact that over 1.5 million tons of crabs are consumed worldwide every year is a testimonial to their culinary popularity. While steaming crabs is the most popular, you can bake, boil, grill, or make it in a wide variety of recipes. In other words, "have it your way!" There are thousands of varieties of crabs. They range in size from 5 inches across, to over 13 feet! Fishermen have a second reason to celebrate crabs today. They use the little ones to catch lunker bass and other fish. As for the largest varieties, well let's just say they'd make one heck of a crab fest! #newrivercovelife #feelingcrabby #meltedbutter
It is only right and fitting that one day of the year is set aside to honor our grandparents. It is time to celebrate those special people who are always there with a hug, a kiss, a cookie, something special, or take us somewhere. National Grandparent's Day originated in 1978. Then President Jimmy Carter declared it to be the first Sunday after Labor Day. If you can, enjoy the day with them. That is the greatest gift they can receive from you. If you can't see them, call them, or skype. When you call, make sure you have the time for a long conversation. Remember, grandparents will always ask about you first and listen intently to everything you have to say. They are never rushed or in a hurry. They are there just for you. #newrivercovelife #makethetime #alwaysloveyou

At your school, church, place of employment, and a variety of other places, your custodial support are silently at work all year long. National Gumbo Day is today. It's a great opportunity, to enjoy a little Louisiana Cajun cooking. It is easy to participate in this special day. Simply eat some Gumbo. For those of us in the south, that is easy, as Gumbo is almost all restaurant menus. You can't walk into a restaurant in New Orleans, that does not offer it. For Northerners, it may take a little research, to find restaurants in your area that serve Gumbo. Or, you may want to look a Gumbo recipe online, and make it yourself. Gumbo is a thick stew, with chicken, beef, or seafood. It is heavily seasoned with cajun spices. And, it absolutely must contain Okra. #newrivercovelife #bubba #jumbogumbo

National Nut Day is today. It's a little kooky and crazy if you ask me, as it is the Pe-nuttiest of all of the holidays. When we first researched this day, we found little information as to its origin or purpose. Additional research uncovered the real meaning and goals for this special day. This day is promoted by the Fair Trade Organization in the U.K. Not surprisingly, it is an organization that promotes and sells healthy nuts. The company has two goals: First, is to raise awareness of Fair Trade organizaton's nut products. No surprise here. The second goal, is to encourage us to include healthy nuts in our diet. Extensive research shows that eating nuts is indeed healthy for us. They are rich in vitamins E and B2, they contain lots of protein, and they are high in fiber. Studies show consuming nuts helps to avoid coronary heart disease, as well as lower bad cholesterol. So, celebrate National Nut Day by adding more nuts in your daily diet. #newrivercovelife #nuttyforyou #nutstothis

Veterans's Day honors all members of the Armed Forces who who served this country valiantly, and in a very big way. They served and fought to protect us, to keep our country safe, and to preserve our way of life. Veterans gave their time, and risked their lives for you and me. In some cases, they made the ultimate sacrifice. This holiday originally was called Armistice Day and was first celebrated in 1921. In 1954, President Eisenhower changed it to Veteran's Day, in honor of those who served and died from all wars. On November 11 at 11:11, 1921 the U.S. France and England each buried an unknown soldier in honor of those who died in World War I. This began the annual Armistice Day holiday. The time and day was picked because fighting ceased in WWI in 1918 on November 11 at 11:11. In keeping with this tradition, work stops on this day and time each year for a moment of silence. #newrivercovelife #honorthosewhoserve #thankful
USMC Day celebrates the birth of the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps were created during the Revolutionary War. The Continental Congress of the newly created United States of America, authorized the creation of the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775. It was later renamed the U.S. Marine Corps. It is often abbreviated as USMC. The Marine Corps has proudly participated in every war that has involved the United States. If you see a Marine today, thank them for their contributions to protecting our country. Active or retired, they deserve our thanks and appreciation. #newrivercovelife #thefewtheproud #everydayheros

Bakers of the world, rise up and bake some bread, for today is Homemade Bread Day. Bread has been made for thousands of years. Estimates date it's origin back to 5000-10,000 B.C. Modern day lifestyles has relegated homemade bread to the world of specialty baking and holiday baking. People just don't have time to bake home made bread. We turn to a quick "run" to bakeries and grocery stores, for our bread needs. The arrival of automatic bread makers has created a small resurgence of home made breads, especially specialty breads. The purpose of this day is easy to understand.--- to make home made bread, and to encourage you and me to make tasty and nutritious bread. So, take a little time out of your busy day, and make some bread. Your nose, your taste buds, and your whole family will be glad you did. #newrivercovelife #freshbaked #cibata
Americans are always fast moving, always in a rush. As a result of our fast moving lifestyle, we need to eat quickly, and are usually unwilling or unable to wait long for our food to be prepared. As a result, fast food restaurants, came into existence. They have been a part of the American restaurant scene since the early 1950's. Participating in National Fast Food Day is easy. You are probably already doing so, on a regular basis. All you have to do, is eat or drink at a fast food restaurant today. To be a full fledged participant on this special day, eat in fast food restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Happy National Fast Food Day #newrivercovelife #fastfoodie #ontherun
Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day is today. Everything in your refrigerator was once a fresh, healthy food, ready for your consumption. It may have been a tasty leftover, intended for later enjoyment. Unfortunately, over the course of weeks or more, things get pushed to the back of the refrigerator and slowly transform into something impossible to identify. Use this day to clean out your refrigerator, top to bottom. When it comes to food safety, we fall back to the old saying " When in doubt, throw it out!" #newrivercovelife #fifo #keepitclean

Looking for a quick caffeine high? Well, you are in luck because today is National Espresso Day, and a cup of espresso should do the trick. The Espresso Machine was first invented in Italy by Luigi Bezzera in 1901. Luigi's goal, was decrease the time of his employee's coffee breaks, and subsequently increase productivity. His espresso machine accomplished this goal, and went beyond, creating a thick, bold, coffee that has become very popular. Espresso machines use steam to force hot water through the coffee grounds, to make coffee faster, with a stronger flavor, and more body. It is topped with a delicate foam called "crema". Coffee used for Espresso is ground finer. #newrivercovelife #shotsshotsshots #hitmesargent

Today is Bagel and Lox Day. Popularized first by Jewish immigrants in New York City, bagels and lox is a classic combination and is a dish usually eaten during breakfast or for brunch. Traditionally from Poland, bagels are ring-shaped bread made out of wheat dough that is first boiled and then baked to give it its distinctive chewy texture. The hole in the middle is thought to make it easier for the bagel to cook as well as easier for bakers to transport and store lots of bagels at one time – all they need to do is to string a rope or thread through the bagel holes. #newrivercovelife #smear #everythingbagels

Darwin's theory of natural selection and evolution was published with compelling evidence in his book, On the Origin of Species (1859). The theory of evolution was widely accepted as fact by most of the scientific community and many of the public by 1870. #newrivercovelife #orgins #naturalselection

This unique ability to reach out the widest audience means radio can shape a society’s experience of diversity, stand as an arena for all voices to speak out, be represented and heard. Radio stations should serve diverse communities, offering a wide variety of programs, viewpoints and content, and reflect the diversity of audiences in their organizations and operations. #newrivercovelife #cruisingdowntheroad #tunesandnews

Its National Pistachio Day. Fun facts: California produces about 300 million pounds of pistachios each year, accounting for 98 percent of America’s production. The pistachio tree grows to about 20 feet tall needing little or no rain and must have high heat. Amazingly, in Iran, they claim to have 700-year-old pistachio trees! A new tree takes between 7 and 10 years to mature and bear fruit. #newrivercovelife #myfavoritenut #pistachioicecream
