We are available for your eyewear needs. At present (06/13/2020) in office service and/or curbside service will be conducted by appointment only. I am sorry that we will not be resuming our regular hours at this time. Please call our office 215-860-2255, leave your number and we can set up a time for you to come in. My main concern is keeping everyone safe. I have plenty of hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, disposable gloves, I lysol doors and tables after each person. Some folks stay in their cars or outside while I fix their glasses. Lets do our best to keep each other safe. Please call me if you need help!!!
The cornea is the only living tissue in the human body without blood vessels. It gets oxygen directly through the air. It is also the fastest healing tissue in the human body.
Do you know that a human eye can see a million colors? It also has an amazing ability to differentiate between varying shades of the same color. For instance, human eyes can differentiate between 500 different shades of gray.
What is a staking press? Also known as a rivet punch, it is a specialized tool for punching and placing rivets into the eyeglass frame itself. It is used to repair cracked or broken hinges.
One-piece wire frames with round lenses, better known as Nuremberg style nose spectacles, came into trend in 1600. They were mass-produced throughout the 17th century and into the early 19th century.
How does soldering deliver the finishing touches to eyeglasses? Soldering burns off the original finish within the area treated, which can then be re-plated.
Blinking has a very important function. It spreads tears all over the eye surface which keeps them moist. It also removes debris from eyes and kills microbes.
“A simple, well-proven surgery can restore sight to millions, and something even simpler, a pair of glasses, can make millions more see.” - Thulasiraj Ravilla
Always wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing certain activities around the home. There are safety glasses and goggles, and eye guards specially designed to provide the right protection for a certain activity.
Tommaso da Modena‘s 1352 portrait of the cardinal Hugh de Provence reading in a scriptorium is the earliest pictorial evidence for the use of eyeglasses.
Specific metals used in eyewear frames, like titanium, require laser welding techniques for repair. Because of the expense of titanium frames, repair is a much better option than replacing them.
Broken or cracked plastic frames are usually joined together with the help of a device called fusing tongs. The device can replace most hinges from plastic frames and also place a metal bridge within a broken nose bridge.
To prevent eye strain, always keep your computer monitor about an arm’s length away from your eyes. It should also be 20 degrees below eye level.
Historical evidence shows that in 1286 c.e. Friar Alessandro della Spina of Pisa, Italy was the first to make and sell corrective eyeglasses. By 1301, guild regulations were established in Venice governing the sale of eyeglasses.
Do you know that you actually see with your brain and not your eyes? Our eyes work just like a camera – they capture light and send data to the brain.
My, what big eyes you have: While the human eye has over two million working parts, the largest eye belongs to the giant squid. It is over eighteen inches in diameter and works in much the same manner as the human eye.
If the temple hinges on your eyeglasses are spring loaded, and the springs have sprung, there is no need to toss the frames. Hinges of all kinds can be easily repaired, restoring the functional value to your expensive-to-replace frames.
Your frames are as important as your lenses. Check them regularly for cracks or loose joints. If they no longer sit properly on your face, bring them in to have them adjusted so you can wear them comfortably.
One of the more frustrating aspects of rimless eyeglasses is fretting over replacement if they're damaged. Rimless eyewear can be repaired as easily as rimmed eyewear, and for a fraction of the cost of a new pair.
If the temple arms of your eyeglasses are irritating the areas behind your ears, consider having comfort tips added to them. While they are typically made of plastic, other materials are available.
Nose pads rest on the nose plate and assist in keeping your eyeglasses in a comfortable location. Sometimes, though, nose pads can become hard or wear down. Having them replaced or adding an aftermarket pad can ease the discomfort.
As simple as eyeglasses are in their configuration, there are many things that can go wrong with them, making for an uncomfortable fit. If you are constantly shifting your eyeglasses, or they keep sliding down your nose, have us adjust them.
One of the great things about professional eyeglass repair is that many times the repair will make the frames stronger than when they were originally manufactured. When glasses are mass-produced, there are often inferior machine-made weaknesses that hand-made repairs improve.
While many home remedy mavens recommend a touch of nail polish on a hinge screw to keep them in place, never use super glue. Many frames are made from plastic, and super glue (and similar adhesives) will melt it.
Many times the splay angle – the angle the nose plates and pads are set at – becomes distorted through use, and the nose plates can even come loose. This minor repair takes but a few minutes and you can have your glasses resting comfortably on your nose.
