It is with great sadness that I am writing this post.
Whitney Russell, NFA Burger employee, long time restaurant worker, Giving Kitchen supporter and volunteer, passed away this morning.
I won’t go in to details, but it was not COVID related.
While I only knew Whitney since March of 2019, I came to know her as a generous, dependable and warm hearted person.
Whitney gave Uber credits to co-workers who didn’t have transportation.
Whitney volunteered at just about any Giving Kitchen event she could.
Whitney took Uber to work one day from Canton to Dunwoody during a horrible storm because she didn’t want to let me down despite me telling her to stay put.
She did all of these things while unknowingly suffering from a rare disease.
The Yiddish word to describe Whitney would be mensch... “a person of integrity and honor."
Please take second today to think about Whitney and her family...she would have done the same for you.
When I started doing the “burger thing” 10 years ago, I would always ask the server...”what does the cook like?
Our cook makes one of these every day for himself.

Back in 2015, eating burgers was just a hobby.
Atlanta Magazine had just published their Top 20 burger list and my son was eager to join my journey.
Each week, we would pick a different location and hit the town. I think we hit all of them, including his first “Power Lunch” at Bones.
I am honored and humbled that just five years later, NFA Burger, not even one year old, was named Atlanta Magazine’s Best Burger for 2020.

As most of you know, I'm out of the restaurant while COVID quarantining.
So today at 12:45, on our 2nd busiest day of the week during the absolute busiest time, I received a text that the health inspector showed up for a routine inspection.
You want to get your blood pumping...that's the best way to do it.
After a tense 45 minutes of wondering what was happening, I received a text that we scored another 100. If you're ever interested, I'd be happy to share with you the kinds of things that can make your score drop precipitously without really doing much wrong or creating an unsafe food environment.
A shoutout to my entire crew who didn't miss a beat and kept pumping out orders while the inspector roamed the land.
Another shoutout to the customers in line who probably wondered why the cashier, my sister, kept answering the phone, because me, the busy body, kept calling her with questions.

NFA is open.
This morning, NFA Burger's newest vendor, CleanWell Services, completed a full disinfection service on the entire gas station using food safe CDC approved materials.
- My wife still has minor symptoms.
- Fortunately, I still have none.
- All NFA staff, outside of me of course, have tested negative at least 1x.
- All employees working today have now tested negative 2x
- Those testing negative 1x and have yet to have their 2nd test will get their 2nd test later this week and rejoin the team if they are negative.
Again, please mask, socially distance use sanitizer and wash your hands.
