Ahh, the Autumnal Equinox. 🍁 The leaves are changing, and the weather is get—wait? Does everything look the same? Oh yeah! Our island holds it's beautiful vibrant colours and luscious green flora almost all year-round! Well, we still love a good reason for celebration. Happy Fall to all!

When asked whether BVI-based catamaran BLUE PEPPER sailed fast, Captain Taylor said, “We lead the charge up the St. Francis Channel. If anybody creeps up on us from behind, too close for comfort, we put up more sail!” When asked what he likes best about living at sea, he said, “Watching the Man o War (frigate birds) soar high above the boat. They’re fishing. When they see a fish, swimming on the surface of the sea, they drop down suddenly out of the sky with a splash, and you can see it flap away with a fish in its beak.”

Gloucester has a long history with ice, both good and not so. Of course long standing companies like Cape Pond Ice in Gloucester, have helped fisherman to preserve their catch for generations, while salting or shacking was employed previously. From Fernwood Lake in Gloucester, my grandfather used to help cut huge blocks out of the lake, eighty years ago, pack them in trucks and ships, with sawdust, and on they went all over the country. The flip side of all of this is the danger which icing posed to mariners, when ice would freeze to the rails, rigging, pilot house etc. This raises the center of gravity to a dangerous and often fatal point. Aids to navigation and deicing measures have improved greatly but no ship is unsinkable... Kindness JP Boudreau

Sea Gypsy by Richard Hovey
I am fevered with the sunset,
I am fretful with the bay,
For the wander-thirst is on me
And my soul is in Cathay.
There's a schooner in the offing,
With her topsails shot with fire,
And my heart has gone aboard her
For the Islands of Desire.
I must forth again to-morrow!
With the sunset I must be
Hull down on the trail of rapture
In the wonder of the sea.
