Recently, a patient of Dr. Nielsen's required an emergency visit for increasing severe eye pain and light sensitivity. She suffered a corneal ulcer due to sleeping in her contacts and other poor contact lens wearing habits. Treatment included prescription drops for at least a month, glasses only (NO contacts), and follow-ups with Dr. Nielsen to track the cornea's healing process.

Moral of the Story: Always do the following as a contact lens wearer
1. Do NOT sleep in your contacts
2. Wash your hands before touching your contacts.
3. After putting in your contacts, dump out the solution that held your contacts overnight.
4. Use new solution at night when you put your contacts in their case
5. Throw away and get a new case for your contacts each month (or boil/sanitize your current case monthly)
6. Call your eye doctor if you experience any negative eye symptoms

Subconjunctival Hemorrhages are quite common. And oftentimes, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what caused the blood vessel to break in the eye. They look worse than they really are, but it never hurts to have your eye doctor take a look to confirm. You can think of a subconjunctival hemorrhage like a bruise on the eye. I've worn glasses and contacts for 35 years and always wanted to have my vision corrected. I looked into LASIK/PRK years ago and just wasn't comfortable having it done. I recently looked into the process again and came across Nielsen Eye and Dr. Moreira. I cannot say enough great things about the staff at Nielsen Eye and Dr. Moreira. Her staff was extremely attentive, caring and knowledgeable about the LASIK procedure from beginning to end. I met with Dr. Moreira and she was fantastic! After the initial exam to see if I qualified for LASIK she too was extremely accommodating to my questions and concerns. Morning of the procedure Dr. Moreira and her staff made you feel at ease and were very attentive. They explained every step I was encountering from taking the pre-op eye drops to what will happen during the procedure. ... Once the procedure was over Dr. Moreira sat me up and I could actually see her and the staff within the room. Although my eyes were extremely foggy from the drops placed in my eyes I was able to get up and walk out of the room on my own. ... A quick note; my follow-up appointment post-procedure Dr. Moreira checked my eyes and commented that it looked like I never had surgery. ... It has changed my life and I wished I had done it earlier. What is Macular Degeneration?
