WHAT TO DO NEXT AFTER GETTING YOUR COVID-19 TEST RESULTS With testing for COVID-19 becoming more widely available throughout the state, more people will be getting tested for COVID-19. What you do next after getting your test result can vary depending on your specific situation, and it can be confusing. Here is some guidance from our physicians at Hawaii Pacific Health to help you understand what to do after you receive your results. If your test result is positive … This means that you can probably spread the COVID-19 virus. You must stay home, in quarantine, for 10-14 days from the day you were tested. If you have no illness symptoms, meaning you are completely well, you must stay home for 10 days. If you are ill, you must stay home for at least 10 days from the beginning of the illness, which might have been before the test day. The actual number of days you must stay home depends on the course of your illness. Check with your health care provider for further guidance. If, at the end of the 10-day period you have had no fever for at least 24 hours (without taking fever medicine) and you are getting better, then your infection would be considered cleared. If you aren’t getting better, check with your health care provider. If your test result is negative … This means you did not have virus present at the time your test was done. This could be because you have had no exposure at all and nothing to worry about. Continue to follow the recommendations to wear a mask over your nose and mouth, maintain at least 6 feet of distance from others, and limit the number of people you interact with. Stay home if you are ill and wash your hands often. Your test could also be negative because it was done too soon, and you could still be able to pass the virus to others. If you know that you were in contact with someone who was positive, such as someone at work or in your home, you still need to quarantine at home for 14 days after your last contact with that positive person even though your test was negative. If you live in a household with someone who is positive and you aren’t able to be apart from them, you must wait until the infected person is cleared (at least 10 days from the start of their illness) and then your 14-day quarantine begins. Yes, this means you need to quarantine for 24 days, if not longer. For more information about when and how long to quarantine, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website.
