How do drugs alter your brain? Your brain makes you who you are. It lets you think, breathe, move, speak, and feel. When drugs enter the brain, they interfere with its normal functions and, over time, can even change how well it works. 1. When a person uses drugs for a long time, the effects on the person’s brain can become permanent—even if they stop using drugs. 2. Drugs can “fool” the brain because their chemical makeup is similar in size and shape as the natural brain chemicals called neurotransmitters, so they fit into brain receptors and start an unnatural chain reaction of electrical charges. 3. If a person uses the drug over and over, a tolerance can develop, which means the person needs more of the drug than before to get the same “high.”

On Friday, the House of Representatives approved a bill to federally legalize marijuana, expunge records, create a federal cannabis excise tax and fund programs to repair the harms of the war on drugs. While the vote was mostly along party lines, five Republicans supported the reform and six Democrats opposed it. Under the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act, cannabis would be federally descheduled and those with prior convictions would have their records expunged. The descheduling provisions would be retroactive, too. Click here to read more: https://www.marijuanamoment.net/house-approves-federal-marijuana-legalization-bill-in-historic-vote/

As we begin the new year, there are two different types of COVID-19 tests you can implement at your workplace to help protect your workforce: ✅ Viral tests: evaluate whether the virus is present in respiratory or other samples. Results from these tests help public health officials identify and isolate people who are currently infected. ✅ Antibody tests: can identify people who may have been previously exposed to COVID-19 and may have developed an immune response to the virus is referred to as the IgG antibody test. The CDC does not currently recommend using antibody testing as the sole basis for diagnosing current infection. As coronavirus continues to spread, is imperative for employers to communicate with their workforce, take health and safety precautions, monitor information about the virus, and plan and prepare for emergencies.

The latest FMCSA violation data was just released and the numbers indicate some alarming data: of every 100 carriers who get audited by the DOT, only seven pass without a violation. Here are the top 4 violations of 2020: 1️⃣ Allowing a Driver to Operate With a Suspended/Revoked CDL 2️⃣ & 3️⃣Failing to Implement an Alcohol and/or Drug Testing Program (or Random Testing Program) 4️⃣ Allowing a Driver With More Than One CDL to Drive a CMV Other common areas of noncompliance involved using an unqualified driver, employing a driver who was disqualified from holding a CDL and not keeping inquiries into the driver’s employment record in the driver qualification file. Messenger RNA vaccines—also called mRNA vaccines—are some of the first COVID-19 vaccines authorized for use in the United States. Here are some key points to know about this type of vaccine, according to the CDC: 💉 Like all vaccines, COVID-19 mRNA vaccines have been rigorously tested for safety before being authorized for use in the United States. 💉 mRNA technology is new, but not unknown. They have been studied for more than a decade. 💉 mRNA vaccines do not contain a live virus and do not carry a risk of causing disease in the vaccinated person. 💉 mRNA from the vaccine never enters the nucleus of the cell and does not affect or interact with a person’s DNA. mRNA vaccines also have several benefits compared to other types of vaccines including use of a non-infectious element, shorter manufacturing times, and potential for targeting of multiple diseases. They can be developed in a laboratory using a DNA template and readily available materials. This means the process can be standardized and scaled up, making vaccine development faster than traditional methods.
The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that drug use by employees cost businesses billions of dollars annually because of increased absenteeism, decreased productivity, workplace accidents, and health care and workers’ compensation fees. The implementation of a drug testing policy can assist your business in reducing these costs by lowering your risks and liability. With the advent of legal, medical and, in some states, recreational marijuana, drug use is becoming more prevalent in the workplace with employees claiming they are legally using marijuana in accordance with state law. While it is still in its infancy, The Clearinghouse has successfully been able to monitor its impact on highway safety by recording, querying, and reporting. In June of 2020, we noted their effects and impacts, so let’s take a look at what they have been able to accomplish after just one year of operating. For over a year now, the FMCSA has been working to improve highway safety by providing employers the information they need when it comes to making safety-sensitive decisions. Here's what they have been able to accomplish after just one year of operating: ✅ 1,767,885 registrations ✅ 4,268,411 queries ✅ 56,158 violations (82% of these being positive drug tests) Collecting data and providing pertinent information to employers hiring or managing safety-sensitive positions is the Clearinghouse’s main priority to help ensure highway safety.
Safety audits are not the only way your company may come under the watchful eyes of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The 4 most common reasons for audits and compliance reviews are: ✏️ New Entrant Audit ✏️ High BASIC scores ✏️ Safety Complaints ✏️ Serious Accidents Whether you are a new carrier or have been around for decades, it is always a good idea to make sure you are in compliance. If your company were to get a DOT audit, would you be compliant? Are you familiar with DOT’s regulations to avoid common, recently increased fines? Have you complied with DOT’s FMCSA Clearinghouse requirements? If you are unsure, contact us today to discuss how we can help ensure you are always in compliance so that you can have peace of mind knowing you are prepared for any audit that comes your way.
Hiring employees comes with a certain amount of risk, especially when hiring safety-sensitive employees whose tasks can affect their own and others’ health and safety. There are several legal and regulatory safeguards put in place to help protect the employer, the employee, customers, and the general public, including testing and collections after an accident. When an accident doesn’t fall under the DOT Post Accident Testing guidelines, testing safety-sensitive employees after an accident is not mandatory. It is up to the discretion of the employer and, in some cases, may not appear to be necessary. However, testing the employee only helps clarify what happened and assists the employer to cover all bases and attain sufficient evidentiary support to better guide the next course of action. Whether you need a third-party administrator of employment screening and compliance services year-round or just in the event of an accident, we can help. Call or DM us today to learn more.
What is the difference between a DOT Drug Test and a Non-DOT Drug Test? 1️⃣ A DOT drug (or alcohol) test is a test done under DOT authority on a DOT-regulated employee, meaning that person is a safety-sensitive employee. 2️⃣ Conversely, a non-DOT drug or alcohol test is typically done under an employer’s authority (in an industry that’s not regulated by the U.S. Dept of Transportation). The employer can decide which employees they want to test and can manage their drug testing program based on their goals and needs. If you have questions about DOT or Non-DOT Drug Testing, we are here to help. We even offer free policy reviews. Give us a call or DM us today! ✨
In terms of safety, information is power. While your company may be up-to-date on all Coronavirus guidelines, make sure you devise a system so that your employees receive and understand any changes in your company’s policies. Make sure that whichever method you choose is sustainable and accessible in case employees have questions. If you are in need of at-work COVID-19 testing services, we can help. Give us a call today.

When interviewing a candidate for an open position at your company, you may have a gut instinct about that individual. Intuition can play a role and help supplement a candidate’s resume and experience in the hiring process. But before you make an offer, you should also run a background check on the candidate. While background checks may seem excessive, especially if you run a small business or you feel like you know the candidate well enough already, that is not necessarily the case. Even the seemingly most trustworthy candidate could be hiding something, and it is important to know exactly who you are hiring.
