October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and at Norridge Gardens, we are committed to educating our community regarding how much this disease impacts our society. The challenge is knowing where to turn to get good information on how this disease affects us. Consider the following statistics: - 1 out of every 8 women will develop breast cancer - There are 230,000 new cases of breast cancer each year - Having a family member with breast cancer increases your risk of contracting the disease - Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women in the US - Early screening through regular mammographies is a significant tool in fighting the disease - Diet, exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight are all factors in breast cancer prevention With the availability of information today, there’s no reason not to be aware of the impact breast cancer has and what you can do about it. Here at Norridge Gardens, we regularly work with patients who are currently battling this disease and the staff has the experience and training to serve those living with breast cancer with compassion, so we can come alongside them as a partner on their journey. But you don’t have to be trained healthcare professionals to get involved. There are several things you can do right now in the fight against breast cancer. First, talk with others who have been affected. All of us know someone who has been struck with breast cancer. It may be a family member, a coworker, or a friend. Take the time to engage with those around you who are either currently facing or have survived breast cancer. Second, support breast cancer research. Several organizations are working nonstop to find a cure for this disease that affects hundreds of thousands of people every year. You can be a part of their work by supporting their efforts. Third, spread the word. We’ve all heard of Alzheimer’s Disease; some of us may assume it’s a normal part of getting older. In the three minutes, it takes you to read this article, three people will develop the disease. If you have ever had an experience with a family member or other loved one afflicted with the condition, you know how overwhelming and disruptive Alzheimer’s can be. Alzheimer’s a progressive neurological disease that is the most common form of dementia. As people grow older, however, the disease becomes more widespread. Those living well into their 90s will see two out of every five people affected. In the last two decades, deaths from heart disease have decreased by 14%, while Alzheimer’s related deaths have increased by 89%. In fact, the latest statistics place Alzheimer’s as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more people than breast and prostate cancer combined. The current cost of Alzheimer’s treatment is about $250 billion across the nation. By 2050, that amount will increase to over $1 trillion. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan declared November National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month. When he made his proclamation about 2.4 million Americans had been diagnosed with the disease. Since then, that number has more than doubled. Each year in the United States, National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day honors all those who lost their lives when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. More than 3,500 Americans lost their lives or were wounded on that solemn day. The day marked a turn in the United States’ position regarding involvement in World War II. The Japanese attack damaged several battleships, permanently sinking both the USS Arizona and USS Oklahoma. Still, others capsized, taking crew members with them. One noted ship was the USS Utah. Along with naval vessels, the attack destroyed aircraft, too. IT’S NATIONAL PHARMACIST DAY! National Pharmacist Day recognizes and honors all pharmacists across the nation. The role of pharmacists has shifted over the years but, most recently they have been working on the frontlines throughout the pandemic. Pharmacists across the state are now fully engaged in distributing and administering the COVID-19 vaccine. Where once they served as the classical “lick, stick and pour” dispensary, they now serve as an integrated member of the health care team. They’re directly involved in patient care and often play a vital role in a patient’s recovery. We celebrated Three King's Day for our Spanish residents here at Norridge Gardens. They enjoyed Rosca de Reyes, which is a Spanish and Latin American dessert bread traditionally served. King's Day is on the twelfth day of Christmas in January. It is celebrated mostly in Europe, Spain, Latin America, and the US, ‘El Dia De Los Reyes’, as in Spanish, marks baby Jesus' glorification by the Three Wise Men. We are so excited for Mr. Early Porter! When he first came to us, he was just 95 pounds and blind. With our therapy team's assistance, REX Therapeutics, including our staff here at Norridge Gardens, he became healthy enough to have cataract surgery and restore his eyesight. Unfortunately, while in the hospital, he got COVID-19 and battled through that and is a survivor! Today he is over 135+ pounds and is strong enough to return home to his wife. We couldn’t be more proud of his hard work and dedication to his health. We participated in Ash Wednesday services today. This holy day marks the beginning of Lenten season for Christians. It takes place 46 days before Easter and the day after Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras. Ash Wednesday services focus on the death and repentance the ashes represent. Following today’s service, the priest distributed ashes on our residents and staff’s forehead in a cross pattern. This solemn day begins a time of meditation, reflection, self-examination, study, and contemplation when Christians consider their sinfulness in preparation for Easter. The sweet holiday of Paczki Day takes place the day before Ash Wednesday.
