It may say Autumn on our calendar but we are in for a hot one this weekend. Here are some helpful tips from our friends over at American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)!! Stay cool our furry and non furry friends. #oakvetash #staycool #avmavets #specialty #hotweekend
In The Cardiology department, the main test that Dr. Williams performs is an echocardiogram, an ultrasound of the heart. With this imaging, we are able to assess the size, shape, and function of the heart, its four chambers, the heart valves, and surrounding structures. The echocardiogram also allows us to measure blood flow through the heart to find the “woosh” sound that your doctor will hear when diagnosing a heart murmur. Based on this test, Dr. Williams will be able to provide a treatment plan that will best help your pet long term. Dr. Williams is also unique because he does not require shaving to perform this test, keeping our patients less stressed and preventing bad haircuts! #oakvetash #cardiology #veterinarian #cardio #cardiologists #dogtor
Everyone, please meet our cardiology team! Dr. Williams is supported by two incredibly dedicated technicians who love their cardiac patients. Hannah joined OakVet as a veterinary assistant, after graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with an animal science degree, and was promoted to our cardiology lead after working with Dr. Williams for the year. She is applying to veterinary school and hopes to follow in the footsteps of her mentors at OakVet in becoming a veterinarian and maybe even a specialist, herself! Alongside Hannah, we have Kristen who joined our Cardiology team after working in Oakvet’s emergency department. She has been a Registered Veterinary Technician for 10 years. She studied at Foothill College in Los Altos. She has been a wonderful addition to the team, with her experience in everything from surgery and dentistry to general practice and oncology. #OakVetash #Cardio #Specialty #cariologyteam #cardio #teamworkmakesthedreamwork
Everyone, please meet our Cardiologist Dr. Justin Williams, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM/Cardiology. Dr. Williams completed his undergraduate degree at the University of California at Los Angeles before obtaining his veterinary medical degree in 2007 from Colorado State University. He then completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital in the Denver metropolitan area. Dr. Williams finished a three-year cardiology residency at the MSPCA Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, and earned board certification in cardiology from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2011. Originally from Arizona, he enjoys the outdoors alongside his wife, Emily, and their three children. His hobbies include fly-fishing, hiking, photography, drawing, and ice hockey. #oakvetash #cardiology #cardiologist #cardio #specialist #specialty #veterinarian #veterinary

Please help us welcome Dr. Sierra Edelsohn to the OakVet family! She is originally from the Bay Area, and graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. Following this, she moved back to Northern California and completed a small animal rotating internship in Santa Rosa. She has always had a passion for surgery, and that year only served to strengthen her goal. She then went on to complete two Surgical Internships, the last of which was at a Level 1 Trauma Center in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. During her time there, she also had the opportunity to help out with the Shedd Aquarium, which included work with some sea otters and a porcupine. Her long-term goal is to complete a Surgical Residency, and in this effort, she also is currently participating in a Research Fellowship. She is thrilled to be back with my family in the Bay Area, and treating the pets of her community. Outside of work, she loves live theatre, traveling, trying new recipes and relaxing with her cats, Polaris and Islay. #oakvetash #surgery #newfamilymember #veterinarian #veterinary #welcome

Thank you Ghirardelli Chocolate Company for surprising our staff with delicious chocolate last week! It brought many smiles! #oakvetash #smiles #holidays #ghirardelli #chocolate
We had a cat present for ingestion of an unknown object. Our Internist, Dr. Polansky, was able to use our state-of-the-art endoscope unit to successfully remove this foreign object. It turned out to be a twist tie. Watch those frisky felines! They get into things just like dogs do and tend to eat the strangest things! Luckily, we are here at OakVet to help your furry friend when you need it the most. Thank you Dr. Polansky and the Internal Medicine team for being the amazing team you are. #OakVetASH #internalmedicine #cat #internist #veterinarymedicine #veterinarian
Miss Muffin arrived at OakVet’s Emergency Department because her owners were concerned about her urination habits. Upon examination and consultation with her owners, it was recommended by our Veterinarian that Miss Muffin have further diagnostics performed due to her symptoms. Radiographs revealed that there was a foreign object in Miss Muffin’s stomach that most likely was causing all the symptoms the owners were seeing, a penny. Pennys contain Zinc which is toxic to pets and can cause severe medical issues. Miss Muffin had a busy day with supportive medications, monitoring, and getting ready for anesthesia. OakVet’s Internal Medicine Department was ready to assist Miss Muffin through the procedure to retrieve the penny and they were successful. Miss Muffin was recovered warmly in fluffy blankets and was able to go home and snuggle in! #OakVetASH #emergencyroom #penny #zinc
On this National Puppy Day we would like to discuss Canine Parvovirus, also known as “parvo”. Puppies are the greatest affected group due to their lack of immunities. It is an extremely invasive disease and can often be deadly, especially if untreated. It is spread by direct contact with an infected dog or infected materials such as feces, soil and food bowls and can stay in the soil up to eight years. Unfortunately, there is no cure for Parvo and OakVet sees many cases weekly. The good news is, parvo is completely preventable by vaccinating your puppy and keeping them isolated until fully vaccinated. Ask your veterinarian for more details and keep your puppy safe! #oakvetash #parvo #keepyourpuppiessafe #puppylove #nationalpuppyday #parvovirus
It's meet the team Monday!!! Today we introduce to you, one of our amazing RVTs, Aubri. Aubri is a Registered Veterinary Technician and has been in the field for 6 years. She is currently working on getting her nursing degree in human medicine, and will be starting to apply to nursing schools next year! Aubri is passionate about caring for both animals and people. Aubri got into veterinary medice because of her love for all fur babies since she was young, and her passion to care for others. When Aubri isn't working she is spending time with her dogs, working out, or hiking. If she could leave a word of advice to her peers it would be to remind ourselves at the end of every day how amazing and rewarding our jobs are! We are the voices for our patients and that is so important. #OakVetASH #registeredveterinarytechnician #vettech #emergency #animals
Meet Cookie. Cookie came to us a few days before the holidays through our Emergency Department with a fish hook stuck in her mouth. The Emergency Team sedated Cookie for a painless assessment and removal of the fish hook. Cookie is brachycephalic, which is the shorter nosed breeds. This can cause complications with sedations, but our ER team took special care to monitor her quite carefully for the procedure. Cookie recovered from sedation uneventfully and was provided with prescriptions to keep her comfortable until she was able to celebrate the holidays. She truly was a "sweet" visitor in more that just her name! #OakVetASH #fishhook #frenchbulldog #er #sweet #cookie
Today Dr. Erin Updegrove is taking center stage. Dr. Updegrove graduated from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and pursued an emergency-focused internship outside of Washington, D.C.
