About

Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation treatment that suits many types of cancers and tumor types. If a physician recommends radiation therapy as part of a patient’s cancer treatment, proton therapy is likely an option. Unlike common radiation treatments that use X-rays or photons such as IMRT, TomoTherapy and Cyberknife, protons have a unique physical property that allows radiation oncologists to precisely target a patient’s cancer and stop the protons inside the tumor, avoiding healthy tissue and organs. This decreases the likelihood of undesired and unnecessary side effects. In some cases, proton therapy even offers higher overall survival outcomes and lower remission rates than other forms of radiation treatment.

Ron Rivera, the head coach of the NFL Washington football team, shared the details of his cancer treatment. He will be treated with Proton Therapy, a non-invasive form of external beam therapy that will help him to continue to coach during the 7 weeks of treatment. Rivera was recently diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the lymph nodes in his neck. Proton Therapy is a highly targeted treatment and one of the most advanced forms of cancer treatment in the world, which will precisely target the cancer cells while sparing the healthy tissue in his head and neck. We had the honor of sharing the journey to a cancer-free life with both Harry (coin #1776 - 2015, prostate cancer) and his wife Kathy (coin #2984 - 2019, breast cancer). This incredible couple surprised us with a beautiful plaque Harry handcrafted for the Center. We can't wait until we can all gather together again for our graduation luncheons! Harry promised he would bring his "rat-rod" (pictured below) for us to check out!
