There are many different types of vacuum cleaners, but at the core, there are two main types — bagless and bagged. Both types of vacuums work similarly as far as their ability to suck dirt and debris from the floors in your home. But when it comes to cleanliness and health, the most important consideration is the method of which you dispose of the dirt and debris your vacuum cleaner collects.
When vacuum cleaners were first invented, all the machines had cloth shake out bags. Dust cup vacuums are a somewhat new innovation in the world of vacuum cleaners. Some people find them easier to use, clean and maintain or just hated stocking up on (and running out of) replacement bags. Bagless machines have filters, and yes, even HEPA filter which are basically the lungs of the machine. But what we see in our shop is that 90-95% of the vacuums filters are never cleaned or changed. The owners do not even know that they are there! When a bag less machine is not cleaned out almost after every usage, all you are doing is blowing the dust, bacteria, viruses and dust mites all over your home. Your machine is just a dirt mover at this point; it is not cleaning the most important items it needs to capture.
On the other hand, Bagged vacuum cleaners were invented to do a better job than a shake out bag. They used a paper bag to capture the dirt and keep it in the machine. As technology has advanced and in home air quality has become more important , the bag itself turned into a great big filter. High Efficient Particulate Arrestor (HEPA) was born. IT is extremely effective at trapping dust, debris and other contaminants inside the bag. The bags are designed to let the air through, but trap the dust and allergens that might escape back into the air and affect you again. And, actually, a bagged machine is much easier to maintain than a bag less machine. You just toss the bag! Germs, bacteria, dust mites, virus…..gone!
With the virus situation that we are in at this time and in the future, we need to get back to a vacuum that really cleans without all the hassle of cleaning the filter after every cleaning. With the new HEPA filter bags being used in most bagged machines you get a much more efficient cleaning.
Did you know that you can take a HEPA rated vacuum cleaner bag and make a mask that is rated right below the N95 masks that all the professionals use? We have people who buy tons of HEPA bags and insert them in the masks that they are making.
When the health situation clears, make sure you keep those masks because you should be wearing them whenever you empty that nasty dust cup--if you dare to still use a bagless vacuum. After 20 years of cleaning and selling almost every kind of vacuum cleaner, I can tell you for a fact that a bagged machine will out perform and out clean a bagless machine.
