To All Our Valued Olympic Pools Customers:
Olympic Pools and Spas wants to make sure all of your pool equipment is safe during the Freeze that is headed our way. Here are a few tips to protect your equipment that we highly recommend doing.
If you have a time clock that operates the pump:
Make sure the pool is clean. If your skimmers and main drain get blocked with leaves and other debris it can prevent the pump from moving enough water to prevent freezing. Even though it’s cold outside, don’t forget to clean the skimmer baskets daily if necessary.
Be sure to run your pool pump continuously when temperatures are near or below freezing. You will need to remove the on and off timer pins, then turn the timer to the on position.
You don't need to run your heater, moving water will not freeze.
Booster pumps for pool cleaners don’t need to run continuously.
Water feature pumps should be run and valves should be open.
If you lose power during freezing weather:
Turn time clock off.
Dial multiport valve to backwash and remove the plug.
Open the air relief valve on the filter.
Remove plugs and lids from pumps, motors, filters, heaters and chlorinators.
Put all of the removed plugs in a Ziploc bag and store them in a safe place until power is restored.
When warm weather returns, replace all plugs and lids.
If you have an automation system:
You have to set the freeze protection setpoint, usually between 35 and 40 degrees F.
You have to assign items to freeze protection. Your filter pump is normally assigned by default, but the other pumps are not.
What items need to be protected?
All of the pumps need to be freeze protected, with the exception of pool sweep booster pumps (since they have water circulation from the main pump). If you have an “in floor” cleaner system that uses a standard pool pump, you need to be sure that is freeze protected as well. Your other items such as light, heater, blower, etc. do not need to be freeze protection. The object of freeze protection is to keep water flowing through all the pieces of equipment so you do not have freeze damage. Normally Texas does not have hard freezes so pool companies and builders do not usually set all the equipment to freeze protect during installation. Please refer to your owner’s manual for the steps to do this or you can go to the manufacture’s website and download a copy there. If you find this to be to difficult, simply set all your pumps run schedules to run for 24 hrs. Or you can put the system in service mode and turn the equipment on, in this mode the equipment will continuously run until you manually turn the system back into auto after the freeze.
IMPORTANT: If any of your pool’s major equipment, such as the pump, filter, or plumbing, is damaged by freezing weather, call 713-782-6776 to schedule an appointment with one of Olympic/Olympia Pools’ trained, professional Service Technicians. We repair and install all types of major pool equipment and can get your pool up and running quickly.
