One of our Members was on duty and got stopped by a gentleman that wanted to show his support. He gave our members this St Michael prayer coin to show his appreciation for law enforcement. We are so thankful for the support and encouragement our community shows our members.
Slow news day at WOWT 6 News? We get the pun, “They Ran Somewhere” Maybe it was too punny and not enough funny. Sorry folks, this is why our members are cops and not stand up comedians. Please tip your servers.

We would like to thank Senators DeBoer, Wayne, and Wishart for attending this training and getting a police perspective in use of force incidents. Nebraska Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge October 7 at 6:54 PM · I'd like to thank Omaha Police Chief Schmaderer for the allowing the FOP to use the Virtra Simulator yesterday. The simulator gives officers sophisticated use of force training that is badly needed. Senators DeBoer, Wayne, and Wishart attended and got to see first hand the value in this type of training for police officers and the simulator itself. Pictured from left to right is OPD training Sgt. Marcus Taylor, myself, FOP 2nd VP Jason Cvitanov, Sen DeBoer, OPOA President Anthony Conner, Sen Wishart, Sen Wayne, and FOP Lobbyist Sean Kelley.

We are excited to help with this program! LaVon Stennis Williams is with Anthony Conner. October 22 at 7:18 PM · Many youth and adults we serve first entered the justice system for driving without a license. Re Connect is pleased to have the support of members of the Omaha Police Officer Association who are working with our age eligible youth to help them study and get their Learners permit or driver’s license. They have arranged for a community partner to come to our program to help them study. Once they are ready, the OPOA will pay the costs for the permit. Community collaborations such as this helps reduce the over representation of our youth, especially our minority youth, in our criminal justice system.

Another sad story out of Texas. A senseless death that could have been prevented. This is the harm that can come from no cash bail and political activist District Attorneys and Judges. This is an actual image of an unlawful protest, blocking traffic at 72nd and Dodge on May 29th. The term “peaceful protest” is used often. Let’s be clear: Blocking traffic is NOT a peaceful protest. Blocking traffic is illegal. Blocking traffic is dangerous to innocent motorists, police officers, and protesters. Blocking traffic not only results in disruption of vital commerce, but it can also result in somebody not being able to pick up their child, or not getting to work on time, or not getting emergency medical services. Blocking traffic has resulted in death and serious injuries to protesters, police officers, and innocent motorists across the country during the recent unrest. Yesterday, Omaha Police Department Chief Todd Schmaderer released an “after-action report” delineating the facts surrounding the legal protests, illegal protests, and riots that transpired in Omaha in late May and early June. Biting a police officer is not a peaceful protest. Attacking a police officer and a female member of the media is not a peaceful protest. Hurling rocks at police officers is not a peaceful protest. Police support and protect truly peaceful protestors. Illegally blocking traffic is not a peaceful protest. Mobbing a lone Nebraska State Trooper in his cruiser on a public road is not a peaceful protest. Jumping on the hood of a Nebraska State Trooper’s car is not a peaceful protest. The Omaha Police Officers Association is aware of a video taken during a recent demonstration that includes reprehensible comments directed toward OPOA President Tony Conner, who is fighting for his life due to complications with COVID-19. The radical activists responsible have crossed the line with this vile and hateful rhetoric, and their words reveal an agenda that promotes harm to law enforcement officers. Their actions should be condemned from every corner of this community.

This behavior is completely unprofessional, especially for government leaders running a public meeting. We are hopeful that the new board members joining in 2021 will bring with them more decorum and statesmanship. We have been opposed to the smaller juvenile justice center from the beginning. We have yet to see an example or explanation of the hypothetical evidence-based programming that is supposed to decrease recidivism and crime in delinquent youth. It’s also concerning to see CARES Act money meant for COVID relief funneled to this project which has been so troubled and does not seem to have majority support from Douglas County constituents. https://www.wowt.com/app/2020/12/15/douglas-county-commissioners-battle-over-cares-act-funding-juvenile-justice-center/

Merry Christmas from OPOA!
OPOA members with Kids and Cops joined Santa, Mrs. Clause, and some reindeer as they visited some awesome kids at the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha this week and handed out gifts. Special thanks to @ManheimSteamroller for donating CDs and Scatter Joy Acres for helping wrangle the reindeer.

2020 has been a difficult and dangerous year. National Fraternal Order of Police December 29, 2020 at 5:21 PM · 2020 was a tragic year for many of our communities, as they witnessed the real-life consequences of elected officials embracing pro-criminal, revolving-door policies. Matt has volunteered his time repeatedly to be with the kids and has represented Able 1 as a professional and caring unit. He has not only been there in person but he has also been able to safely land the aircraft for the Muscular Dystrophy camp so the kids could see them. Matt is a kid at heart, caring, fun, always smiling, helpful and able to be goofy to make someone’s day by helping them smile. Pilot Matt Baughman is a truly appreciated and valued part of the Kids and Cops program. Thanks Matt.

We pray for OPOA member Officer Michael Salseda to have a quick and healthy recovery. We are so thankful that no Officers or innocent motorists were killed by this dangerous drunk driver. We are glad to see this program become a reality. OPOA President Conner suggested diversion after recent civil unrest as a chance for community members that had been arrested and police to talk through things and allow the citizens to avoid criminal charges. We believe this program will benefit the community and police. https://mayors-office.cityofomaha.org/city-news/501-new-diversion-program-offers-second-chance-after-arrest
Tragedy strikes, yet again. Another repeat violent criminal - under “supervision” by the state - commits an unthinkable crime. OPD just announced the arrest of Lawrence BOLDEN for the murder of Andrew BROWN. Public records indicate BOLDEN was on “Post Release Supervision” for Accessory to Robbery. He had just been released on 1-11-21. Clearly, he wasn’t ready. BROWN, a habitual criminal, has also spent time in prison for Possession of Meth.

Our members love to give back and volunteer their time helping local community partners. OPOA member Officer Schlotzhauer organized a donation drive for Girls Inc. of Omaha and between our members, members of Nebraska Association of Women Police and the community, they were able to donate over 8,500 hygiene products and other items for the young ladies.
Sergeant Kopietz is a veteran officer, born and raised here and working every day to protect and serve our city. Omaha Police Officers work every day to ensure that our city is a welcoming, inclusive, and safe place to live. Not only because that's the job, but because this is also the city we call home. We are the husbands and wives, sons and daughters, friends and neighbors who are dedicated to the safety and security of every family, every business, and every community in Omaha.

We are thankful that our members have been given the opportunity to receive the vaccine. The National Fraternal Order of Police reports that so far, 404 law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty due to #COVID19. state-by-state breakdown https://fopcovid19.org/news/covid-19-line-of-duty-deaths/
We support LB51. It is a common-sense bill that improves police accountability and allows for law enforcement professionals to gain much needed ongoing training. This will improve community relations and public safety. https://t.co/vCsZNh9aMP https://www.ketv.com/article/lawmakers-hear-bills-that-ban-police-chokehold-and-define-use-of-force/35412041
We strongly support LB537 because it will help make Omaha safer and provide judges with more discretion. Our chairman recently spoke to WOWT about the need for change in legislation, while still maintaining a high bar for detaining youth. https://www.wowt.com/2021/02/03/police-and-prosecutors-push-to-change-laws-for-juvenile-detention/

Defunding police has dire public safety consequences. Oakland is facing a budget shortfall and public safety is already suffering. By every public safety metric “bail reform” has been an unmitigated disaster wherever it has been implemented. Law abiding, hard working members of our communities are the ones who suffer most. Yet rogue prosecutors/judges continue to push it. -Joe Gamaldi National FOP VP https://t.co/xz4CGpOnQr

We encourage everyone to research and pay close attention to city council elections. Be aware of current issues and talk to your representatives and let your voice be heard. We want to avoid a news cycle like this in Omaha. Public safety has to remain a priority.
We support Director Frakes’ proposal for a new prison and repurposing of the existing building. This is not only good for public safety, but safer for staff and inmates. This will make more space and staff available to help with rehabilitation programs which will lead to decreased recidivism. https://omaha.com/news/state-and-regional/crime-and-courts/nebraska-corrections-director-calls-for-new-prison-transformation-of-state-penitentiary/article_71815cfa-707b-11eb-a8af-4f43fd954fc8.html

Omaha is very fortunate to have responsible local media professionals. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case across the nation. Imagine you or a loved one being in a terrible crash, or being the victim of a violent crime or maybe an embarrassing incident, only to have media sources pressuring the police to “release the video” or “be transparent”. For what reason? Social Media “Clicks”? Morbid Curiosity? Ridiculous. Publicly displaying innocent people during the worst times of their lives shouldn’t be a form of entertainment. It’s not “news”. Omaha citizens shouldn’t worry about that. In Nebraska, body camera video isn’t accessible for general public viewing, for now. https://www.foxnews.com/us/will-bodycam-footage-of-tiger-woods-harrowing-rescue-be-released

A majority of voters (53%) support building a new prison to increase capacity and expand rehabilitation programs instead of sentencing reform (37%) to address overcrowding. Nebraskans appear ready to build the infrastructure needed to fix the overcrowding crisis in our prison system.

The OPOA does not support the elimination of cash bail. In cases of economic hardship, judges can lower bonds for offenders that have ties to the community and a reasonable expectation to not harass victims or fail to appear at future court proceedings. The complete elimination of cash bail would be extremely dangerous and not fair for victims. https://thetexan.news/houston-police-chief-warns-of-backlash-on-felony-bail-policy-decries-harris-county-activist-judges/
The OPOA does not support the elimination of cash bail. Currently, in Nebraska, there is enhanced bail for crimes of domestic violence to provide some protection for victims and time to find a safe place before the offender can be released. In cases of economic hardship, judges can lower bonds for offenders that have ties to the community and a reasonable expectation to not harass victims or fail to appear at future court proceedings. The complete elimination of cash bail would be extremely dangerous and not fair for victims. https://www.foxnews.com/us/illinois-mother-estranged-husband-murdered-baby-cash-bail-crime-homicide?cmpid=prn_newsstand

Situations can go from calm to deadly in seconds for law enforcement officers. On behalf of all the officers in the OPOA, our deepest sympathies and condolences to Mayor Stothert and her family. Dr. Joe Stothert was a widely respected and dedicated public servant who’s work had a profound impact on the law enforcement community. We are heartbroken for the Mayor and her family will be in our prayers.

With the virus restricting in-person visits, Officer Katie Rath reached out to the Kids and Cops families a few months ago and started pen pals between the kids and Officers. Mounted Patrol requested a group of kids right away. Pictured is their first pen pal, Caysen who was excited to receive his letter. Also pictured are Officer Richard Stickney on Lucy and Officer Scott Sungy on Maximus, who both volunteered. Our members are always looking for ways to give back to the community and lift the spirits of the children and families suffering from serious health issues, even during the pandemic.
The OPOA does not support the elimination of cash bail. In this case, the offender had what some would consider a low bond for a violent crime, was able to post it, and then later arrested for an unthinkable homicide of a child. In cases of economic hardship, judges can lower bonds for offenders that have ties to the community and a reasonable expectation to not harass victims or fail to appear at future court proceedings. The complete elimination of cash bail would be extremely dangerous and not fair for victims. This headline is no surprise. Crime is a complex problem that requires a partnership with the police and the community to address. The OPOA does not support the elimination of cash bail nor bail reform which puts victims at risk from violent offenders.
The OPOA does not support the elimination of cash bail. The OPOA supports victims and their right to be safe from violent offenders. It is not at all surprising to see this IL Senator’s opinion change when he is the victim rather than a politician touting idealistic progressive criminal justice reform that actually does more harm than good. The elimination of cash bail is a public safety disaster and not fair or safe for victims. https://cwbchicago.com/2021/03/senator-who-sponsored-cash-bail-ban-is-outraged-driver-who-threatened-him-with-gun-only-had-to-post-1500-to-get-out-of-jail.html?fbclid=IwAR1ERerOUIprFaJ51ghq7HrQ5KJT4Qwm1xnbvlnhTXdr8L-HlkrG5KBeZNg
