It’s a wrap. Another summer has come and gone, and winter is just around the corner. Here are some fall maintenance tips to keep your community at its best:
• Landscaping – Fall is the perfect time to plant annuals, spray for weeds, and clear fallen leaves from bushes and drainage areas
• Pool and spa – Check motors and pumps, as well as clean and replace filters.
• Lighting – The days are shorter so inspect bulbs and fixtures and replace as needed.
• Seasonal décor – If you plan to decorate, review your plans with your management staff to jump start the festivities.
Be sure to review your association’s grounds contracts to see what’s covered for fall clean-up/winter preparation, then discuss your action plan with your maintenance professionals.

Fall is just around the corner and now is a good time to start thinking about preparing your perennials for winter. For cold climates, it’s best to stop fertilizing perennials by midsummer to encourage slow growth and hardening off for winter. However, fall is a good time to feed plants by working a 4 to 6-inch layer of compost around the flower beds. The compost will break down slowly and release important nutrients while improving the soil. Once the first frost hits, cut back the dead foliage and dig up the bulbs to store for winter. Preparing your flowers early can save your association time and headaches down the road.
