Why rest and recovery are important?
When we workout and introduce the muscle to a new stimulus either by a new contradiction, heavier weight, or different speeds in which we workout we cause microscopic damage to muscle fibers. After we cause these micro tears DOMS will begin to set in. DOMS stands for delayed onset muscle soreness. Which is felt 48-72 hrs later. One common misconception about DOMS is that it is due to lactic acid accumulation, but lactic acid is not a component of this process. DOMS is a side effect of the repair process that develops in response to the damage done. Remember Activities which cause DOMS are all cause by muscles to lengthen while force is applied. This is eccentric muscle action. Next thing I want to add is that can DOMS be prevented. The quick easy answer is not Really, but we can decrease the severity. The best way to reduce DOMS is to progress slowly in a new program. Allowing the muscle time to adapt to the new stress. Now comes the most important part of the process, rest and recovery. During rest, cells called fibroblasts repair it. This helps the tissue heal and grow, resulting in stronger muscles. We want to tear the muscle and have it come back stronger and thicker. Also, your muscles store carbohydrates in the form of glycogen. During exercise, your body breaks down glycogen to fuel your workout. Rest gives your body time to replenish these energy stores before your next workout. Next we have regular rest is essential for staying safe during exercise. When your body is overworked, you’ll be more likely to fall out of form, drop a weight, or take a wrong step. Overtraining also exposes your muscles to repetitive stress and strain. So ultimately we want to decrease our chance of injury. Physical activity increases energy-boosting hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Constant exercise, however, overproduces these hormones. You’ll have a hard time getting quality sleep, which only worsens fatigue and exhaustion. Rest can help you get better sleep by letting your hormones return to a normal, balanced state.

Happy Monday everyone! Scheduling rest and recovery in your workout routine is extremely important. Remember working out tears down muscle, it is during the rest phase that the muscle is rebuilt bigger and stronger. Without rest you will not have optimal results. Recovery such as stretching, foam rolling and massage are very important to ensure that muscles, tendons, Ligaments and joints remain pliable which reduces injury risks. So remember to think twice the next time you consider skipping out on your rest and recovery.
