ORNING GLASS
Glazier: Shop and Field Technicians
Meet our owner: John Scheppler
John has owned Orning Glass since 1997. After earning his MBA, he was a traveling consultant for many years. Ownership of Orning Glass allowed him to grow a company while being closer to home. He has been married to Kris for 37 years, has 3 grown children and 2 grandchildren. When not at the office he can likely be found skiing in Colorado or traveling with Kris.
About Orning Glass:
Ed Orning was an architecture student at Iowa State University. In 1928 he purchased a company that made horse harnesses and building awnings. Seeing a decline in the need for horse harnesses, he changed the name to Orning Glass and Awnings in 1931. Sometime in the early 1960s, "an awnings" was dropped from our name and we have been Orning Glass Company ever since.
Our current owner, John Scheppler, purchased Orning Glass in 1997. His father-in-law, Bill Allen, had attended grade school with one of Orning's previous owners, Junior Thrasher. Junior and co-owner Malcolm Locke were approaching retirement age and Bill set up a meeting between the owners and John. John had his MBA and consulting experience but glass was a new industry for him. He learned alongside Malcom and Junior for a number of years to ensure a smooth transfer of ownership. John has since grown Orning Glass and continues to look forward to future opportunities of growth.
