Certain orthodontic conditions can be treated as early as 7 or 8 years old. Although they may not be able to be totally corrected at that time, early orthodontic treatment will guide the growth and development of your children’s jaws and teeth so they will not require orthodontic treatment later in life. In fact, one of the biggest benefits of early orthodontics is that early orthodontic treatment can drastically reduce the amount of treatment that a child needs to undergo in his/her lifetime. Early treatment and intervention is the key to most orthodontic problems, including the possible complications that may arise later in life. Early intervention is preventive care. You need no explanation why preventive care is a better approach. Most orthodontic problems are much easier to correct sooner rather than later. https://www.orthowny.com/2020/04/benefits-of-early-orthodontics/ ORTHOWNY.COM Benefits of Early Orthodontics | Buffalo Orthodontists | Free Screening
Payment over time is a popular option. We understand that especially now more than ever, with Covid-19 affecting peoples ability to work at the same capacity as before, finances are tight for some households. That’s why we gladly offer in office financing in our office to help make orthodontic care more affordable for those impacted by this pandemic. We offer an interest free payment plan, consisting of an initial payment and the balance spread out over the course of treatment. The smaller monthly payments without interest make this an attractive option. With this option, we offer convenient automatic payments and payment coupon books. This way, even if you don’t have dental insurance for orthodontic care, you can still get the treatment you need without worrying about a large up-front cost. Our office can also provide private or out-of-office financing options. These plans may allow for no initial payment, deferred interest and extended monthly plans. We currently offer plans via CareCredit and can often get approval in minutes. https://www.orthowny.com/2020/06/dental-insurance-for-orthodontic-care/ ORTHOWNY.COM Dental Insurance for Orthodontic Care | Orthodontists Associates of WNY
Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which a patient’s breathing stops and starts multiple times while they sleep. Sleep apnea also manifests itself in the form of extremely shallow breathing during sleep. These shallow breaths or the lack of breathing can last anywhere between a few seconds to several minutes. We cannot emphasize how severely damaging it is to the human body to be deprived of oxygen for several seconds, let alone minutes. https://www.orthowny.com/2019/06/orthodontic-treatment-for-sleep-apnea/ ORTHOWNY.COM Orthodontic Treatment for Sleep Apnea | Orthodontist in Buffalo, NY
TMD is not a singular disease that has a direct cause or effect. Rather, it is a composition of multiple conditions that when grouped together is classified as a Temporomandibular Disorder. Formally, there are three categories of TMD that are most common. First is known as myofascial pain. This is the most common of the three and occurs when muscles which control the jaw, neck, and shoulders incur pain. A second category is internal derangement of the joint. Just as this one sounds, this category forms when you have a displaced or dislocated jaw or disc. The third type is called degenerative joint disease. This is the least common form of TMD and occurs when the jaw joint has signs of either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. It is important to understand that it is possible to have multiple of these classifications at once, so it is important to identify which ones are causing the pain. To do so, your dentist can focus on behavioral and physical factors that can cause this. https://www.orthowny.com/2019/07/tmd-treatment/ ORTHOWNY.COM TMD Treatment | Orthodontists Associates of WNY | Orthodontist

There was a time when most parents didn’t even begin to think about the need for childhood orthodontic treatment until their children reached their teenage years. In the past, the trend for childhood orthodontic treatment was to wait until most or all of a child’s permanent teeth had come in. However, most orthodontic problems are much easier to correct sooner rather than later. That is why professionals recommend and insist upon early orthodontic treatment. Now, parents, dentists and orthodontists alike look toward treating children that haven’t quite hit their teen years. Not ready to come to our office yet? We’re now offering virtual consultations during COVID-19 to help our existing patients get the same quality treatment in the comfort of their home. As each patient gets her or his braces removed, we provide detailed instructions regarding how the retainers should be worn. When we remove the braces from teenagers or adolescents, we instruct them to wear their retainers about full-time for six to eight weeks after the braces come off. Following this initial period, we recommend they slowly reduce their wear to bedtime only. We insist upon patients wearing their retainers while sleeping, at least until we are certain that the wisdom teeth will not cause changes in the bite. If you happen to accidentally miss a day or two, this will generally not cause an issue as the teeth shift over time. However, if patients choose not to wear their retainers for extended periods of time, this can lead to issues as your teeth will start shifting again and all the work you achieved by wearing braces will be lost. https://www.orthowny.com/2019/12/retainers-after-braces/ ORTHOWNY.COM Retainers After Braces | Orthodontists in Buffalo, NY | Free Consultation
This tends to affect impatient and primarily young people. You get a new shirt that you want to put on, but the tags are still on it. Instead of finding scissors, you bite down on the plastic. This is a dangerous thing to do with braces. This could break your brackets off your teeth or snap the wire. It can also damage your teeth if you are applying enough pressure. You are at risk of chipping your tooth every time you decide against finding a pair of scissors. Having a chipped tooth with braces is not an issue that you want to get yourself into as it may require taking the braces off to repair the chip, or waiting until your treatment is complete before you can fix the chipped tooth. It’s best not to try to open packages with your teeth and just grab a pair of scissors. https://www.orthowny.com/2019/12/bad-habits-avoid-braces/ ORTHOWNY.COM Bad Habits to Avoid with Braces | Buffalo Orthodontists | Free Consultation
When getting traditional braces put on you will see what is called a bracket placed on the teeth that are being prepared for treatment. Your orthodontist will cement these brackets to the teeth. Sometimes these brackets can be placed behind the teeth. Brackets can be made of traditional steel, plastic, or ceramic. Plastic and ceramic are used if you so choose for them to be less noticeable. These are often called clear braces. In some patients, a band will also be cemented to the tooth. Attached to these brackets is a wire that will actually be doing the work to move the teeth into proper alignment. These wires are affixed to the brackets with rubber bands. These rubber bands are often offered in whatever color the patient chooses. For instance, many of our patients are Bills fans and opt for their rubber bands to reflect the teams signature red, white and blue colors. We also see many Sabres fans opt for blue, white and gold. The possibilities are endless and totally up to the patient. Some patients will have springs placed on this wire to further control the movement and alignment of teeth. In some cases, there will be rubber bands that are placed on an tooth from the top and bottom of the jaw that will fix the bite. https://www.orthowny.com/2020/01/how-braces-work/ ORTHOWNY.COM How Braces Work | Braces for All Ages in Buffalo, NY | Free Consultation
Are you or a loved one considering braces to help you achieve the healthy and beautiful smile you deserve? Unless we win the genetic lottery, many of us will have to receive orthodontic treatment at least once. Those of us who face issues such as misaligned teeth, jawbones widened with palette expanders, or dental trauma can benefit from wearing braces, which slowly guide teeth into the ideal positions. Keep reading to find out what you need to know when preparing for braces. Receiving braces is not as simple as a single visit to an orthodontist’s office, though; there are several steps to be taken so that by the time that the braces are ready to be glued onto the teeth, both the orthodontist and the patient know exactly where the braces will be situated and how much time should pass before the braces can be removed. In the video below, Western New York orthodontist Steven J. Hietanen outlines the steps you can take when preparing for braces. https://www.orthowny.com/2020/01/preparing-for-braces/ ORTHOWNY.COM Preparing For Braces | Orthodontic Treatment | Orthodontist in Buffalo, NY
