NC is proud to have Dr. Newsome STILL practicing today in Charlotte–WOW! 👁 She has been providing care to patients at her very own practice for over 20 years at Advantage Vision Center. She is also recognized as the first African American female fellow in the American Academy of Optometry.
Dr. Newsome is also known for providing free eye care in other countries to those who need it most!

During Black History Month, we would like to celebrate by recognizing those who have made an impact on the Optical field.
Patricia Bath was an ophthalmologist and first black female doctor to receive a patent for her laser technique of treating Cataracts by using the Laserphaco Probe.
Dr. Bath was a researcher, an educator, and a physician. During all her years researching she helped cofound a non-profit called American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness to help bring eye care to folks who did not have access to health care. 👓🖤
