Finding a way to celebrate during a pandemic, as we all know, is difficult! We decided to represent Dr. Overman's vision for who we are here. We thought we would find ways to give to the community that continues to give so much. Thank you! Our acts of kindness have been thought out and carried out by the team. Looking for a good book to read? We HIGHLY recommend the book Breath by James Nestor. This New York Times best seller, dives into the importance of nasal breathing and the amazing health benefits it provides. If you have been to our office recently there is a good chance Dr. Overman has discussed breathing and/or sleep with you. He understands the detrimental effects that poor breathing can have on a person and the chronic disease associated. This quick and interesting read will fill you with the knowledge Dr. Overman is passionate about!

Do you know Jamie? He is our UPS delivery guy and we appreciate him so much! He is so reliable and delivers with grace in all types of weather. He always brings prompt delivery with a smile :)
We surprised him with a basket of treasures on his typical delivery to the practice. We knew we needed to be quick so we came out to the truck immediately upon his arrival with the surprise! It definitely took him by surprise :) He was like "Really, for me???"

Do you know about Jamie and his honey bees?
"Honey bees are extremely fascinating creatures. It is nature at it's finest! So that is the reason I got into keeping them about 5 years ago. The honey they produce is the best that I have ever eaten. It is truly raw meaning that it is never heated nor anything else added. I provide sea salt water for the bees near their hives. The bees love this source of water! They use water to make their honey and I am convinced this is why it is the best! I am now up to about 60 hives on the NW side of Ames. You can find my honey at Brekkes in Ames, Red Granite Farm in Boone, Reiman Gardens in Ames, Iowa Arboretum in Madrid and the Woodsmith Store in Clive."

Attention new moms and parents with babies:
Did you know what your baby eats and the way your baby eats will be a key factor in determining the size of his/her mouth?
At day 1, your baby is developing habits of sucking, swallowing and breathing that will contribute to the way that their faces will grow. Introducing solid foods safely, and at the appropriate age, will help your baby’s jaw grow properly and help avoid crowded teeth and airway issues. For more information, we highly recommend the book, Baby-Led Weaning by Gill Rapley, PhD and Tracey Morkett.

Let’s face it, we could all use some better sleep! Here are a few tips to help make that possible:
1. Eliminate use of electronics 30 min before bed
2. Avoid eating or exercising right before bed
3. Use blackout curtains and eliminate all light
4. Limit processed foods to avoid inflammation in the body
5. Start a daily nasal hygiene routine
What is nasal hygiene and why is it important? Having a good nasal hygiene routine is critical to help clear out the nasal passages of any debris and to promote good airflow through the nose during sleep. When you are breathing properly through the nose, you will get deeper and more restful sleep.
Start by blowing your nose and using a nasal spray. We recommend Xlear- it is a safe and effective spray that uses Xylitol (a sugar alcohol) to stop the production of bacteria. Then, before bed, place a Breathe Right strip on the nose and/or Nose Cones in the nose to help open the nasal passages.
You will be amazed at how effortless breathing through the nose will be! Give it a try- you have nothing to lose and sleep to gain!

Have you heard of Weston Price?
He was a Canadian dentist (1870-1948) who traveled the world looking at different cultures and their diets and nutrition. He concluded that the Western diet affected the growth of the face resulting in smaller jaws and crowded teeth. Even more reason to eat those raw veggies!

I took my daughter in for her first dentist appointment with Shea and Dr. Overman this week! It was awesome! My (almost) 3 year old was able to check out all the tools that Shea was using, and Shea let her test things out before using them on her. My kid was so excited to be at the dentist, watch Paw Patrol and get toys afterwards (and they were so generous with the treasure chest!). She can't wait to go back, and I know she'll have a great relationship with the dentist thanks to Shea's patience and openness.

After looking at reviews and the website for Overman Dentistry, I was able to schedule an appt pretty quickly online. I really like that they have online scheduling and it’s so easy to use! I was really impressed at how I was treated at my visit. I’ve never had a more positive experience with a dental office before. Everyone I met at the office is very friendly, caring, and nice! Dr. Schloerb and Ashley were amazing and made sure I was comfortable during a tooth extraction. They really took time to explain everything to me and answered any questions I had. I highly recommend them!

I've had an incredible experience at Overman Family Dentistry. I've had some complicated oral health issues due to some overall health issues I've been dealing with. Dr. Overman has been well up to the task of helping me deal with those complications, and strictly as a dentist, he's one of the best I've ever had.As a result, I've had to go into the office for quite a bit of work. In that time, I've gotten some insight into how the office operates. A lot of dentist's office have nice people working there, but Overman Family Dentistry really feels like a family. The staff is united in purpose, and that really comes across in the care you receive. You really will feel cared for here.Overman Family Dentistry has my highest recommendation, it's simply the best place for dental care in central Iowa.
