Medtronic has been producing the Interstim for urinary retention, fecal incontinence and bladder urge incontinence for over 20 years.
Up until now you couldn't use this technology if you needed an MRI.
They just announced - now the new model is MRI compatible and rechargeable! Don't worry, if you don't want the hassle of a weekly recharge, it still comes in a non-rechargeable model.
Gratitude abounds.
It is the simple thoughts of kindness that make you appreciate the humanness between us all.

How Do Astronauts Go to the Bathroom in Space?
INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs) are commonly encountered in postmenopausal women. Optimal non-antimicrobial prophylaxis for rUTIs is an important health issue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of estrogen in the prevention of rUTIs versus placebo.
CONCLUSIONS Compared with placebo, vaginal estrogen treatment could reduce the number of rUTIs and lower the vaginal pH in postmenopausal women.

People over 70 with overactive bladder have a 50% greater risk of falls at home.
It isn’t just annoying.
It is safety.
Physical therapy is the first line therapy.
Medications aren’t great but help some.
Sorrry to say it but bladder irritants like coffee, when eliminated, decrease urinary urgency and frequency. (Sorry, Pacific Northwest we know it is hard to hear).
“Third line therapies” are what we specialize in. When the above is not enough. (And you can’t ever think of giving up the coffee).
Disrupted sleep because of going to the bathroom is common and not considered a normal part of aging.

Good news for the Pacific Northwest!
HealthDay reports researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 16 studies and concluded that men who drink the most coffee have a 9% lower risk of prostate cancer compared to men who drink the least amount of coffee.

Overactive bladder, even in the absence of bladder leakage (urge incontinence) is an important predictor of falls in older adults.
It’s not the vasectomy that makes you healthier.
It is just that men who agree to vasectomy tend to be healthier and take an interest in their health care.
Oh, and you can get it with nitrous.

We often get asked what is “normal” for emptying your bladder.
Typically voiding 6-8 times a day is normal. Unless you love being hydrated. Then it will be more.
We “train” our bladders to hold too long because we are busy people.
This can occasionally backfire with leakage, pain, infections, and bladder damage over time.
Well what about the night?
Getting up one or less times a night is normal. Age 65 or older two or less is considered normal.
Limit fluids before bed and don’t sip on fluids when you get up at night. Or do, if you like. 🙂
If you give your kidneys a job to do, they will give your bladder a job to do.
Math in the middle of the night.
