National GERD Awareness Week (Nov. 22-28 this year) comes just in time for Thanksgiving – when many Americans may experience heartburn associated with overeating. The holiday spirit is alive and well in Las Cruces! Texas Roadhouse recently held a fundraiser for our patients at Memorial Cancer Center and yesterday delivered 125 $25 gift cards that will be distributed to patients. Thank you!
Dr. Dolores Gomez, chief medical officer at MMC, acknowledged that it may still be a while before the community at large can access the vaccine, but stressed the importance of continuing to adhere to COVID-safe practices.
"In the meantime, we need to continue to be safe," she said. "That's wearing your mask, keeping social distance and washing our hands. And right now, during the holidays, trying to stay 'virtual' as much as possible."

Big news today! Healthcare workers, and fire and EMS personnel received their first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at Memorial Medical Center. In this video, hear from them about why they got vaccinated and why it's still vitally important to wear a mask, practice social distancing and maintain good hand hygiene moving forward.
This first wave of vaccine is only being distributed to frontline workers, per CDC and state guidelines. We encourage everyone in our community to get vaccinated once the vaccine is more widely available, hopefully in the coming months.

January is designated as #CervicalHealthAwarenessMonth. The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly 14,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, and more than 4,000 women will die from the disease. You can’t see, smell or taste radon, but it could be present at a dangerous level in your home. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in America and claims the lives of about 21,000 Americans each year. In fact, the EPA and the U.S. Surgeon General urge all Americans to protect their health by testing their homes, schools and other buildings for radon.
Exposure to radon is a preventable health risk and testing radon levels in your home can help prevent unnecessary exposure. If a high radon level is detected in your home, you can take steps to fix the problem to protect yourself and your family.

Native Air’s new air ambulance made its debut at Memorial on Feb. 10, transporting its first patient from our hospital. This EC-135, twin-engine helicopter has a larger interior than the previous unit that served the Las Cruces area. We're glad to have it in service in our community!

Today, we hope you join us in observing Critical Care Transport Nurses Day.
Nurses are part of the MMC Transport Team providing care to critically ill and injured patients at the scene of accidents and during transport between facilities. These professionals bring the skills of a critical care nurse to the patient, providing care and important comfort during transport.
Memorial also has the only pediatric transport team in Southern New Mexico. Memorial’s pediatric transport team is staffed with highly skilled professionals that can safely transport a child from anywhere in Southern New Mexico back to our facility to receive high quality care.

After almost 25 years of service at MMC, Errol Hull has decided to retire. Errol has served our hospital and our community as a Medical Technologist, providing accurate laboratory test results in the areas of hematology, chemistry, blood bank and microbiology. Errol’s focus while working the graveyard shift was always patient safety. His experience, guidance and kind spirit have been encouraging to many of his coworkers. Errol has been a good scientist but also a friend to many. We thank Errol for his dedication and commitment and wish him the best of luck in his new endeavors!

We're proud to share that Memorial Women’s Imaging Center at the Memorial HealthPlex has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology. Mammography is a specific type of imaging test that uses a low-dose X-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women.

The COVID to Home program, which launched in late November and continues today, has freed up about 250 hospital beds for the most at-risk patients, said Dr. Danielle Pattison, a physician with Memorial Medical Center's family residency program.
"During the peak of the crisis, we were able to take care of patients with some oxygen requirements who would usually be treated in the hospital," Pattison said. "We monitored them at home, checking in with those patients daily, or more often, depending on how sick they were. That freed up beds for patients who really needed it while taking care of other people in a safe manner at home."

After 33 years of service at Memorial Medical Center, Anna Paustian, MT(American Society for Clinical Pathology) has decided to retire.
Anna started working at MMC on March 12, 1988. Through her decades of service, Anna has contributed to the growth of this organization and has provided expertise and excellence in the areas of chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis and coagulation. She was a mentor to new employees and an excellent resource for clinicians.
