Troy Arner, a detective with the hospital police department at Bellevue Hospital, is our next #HighgateHero. Troy’s normal job of keeping people safe was made especially difficult by the invisible enemy that was COVID-19. The pandemic led Troy to evolve in many ways, from how he handled his day-to-day activities to how he interacted with his family. His mother has an immunodeficiency illness, so he had to isolate from her and his young daughter for three months to keep them safe. Seeing the suffering of the ill, and being apart from his family for so long shifted his perspective on life. While you never know what tomorrow brings, Troy was committed to protecting others, putting his own health at risk in the process. For Troy, there was no other decision. He puts on his uniform with the goal of giving people a sense of hope, pride and reassurance that no matter what they are enduring, they are not alone.

It was an honor to host #HighgateHero Jason Anderson, a nurse practitioner from the Sunshine State who brought his skills and positive attitude to help those fighting on the front lines in the hard-hit Big Apple.
Not knowing what to expect, Jason was thrust into a true crisis. His first shift in the Emergency Department turned out to be the shock of his life – patients everywhere, often in distress, and constant, chaotic activity. After losing four patients on the first day, he returned to his room at Park Central Hotel devastated and emotionally drained. The next morning, Jason resolved to focus his energy on doing everything he could to support the efforts to battle the illness, putting his own feelings on hold. Whether it was providing critical care, holding the hands of the dying, or being a positive presence, Jason – who wound up staying 48 days beyond his 21-day commitment – played a critical role in flattening the curve.
Jason likes to think that his team’s efforts helped to wake up the city that never sleeps.

Park Central guest Rachel Murray defines what it means to be a #HighgateHero.
A physician’s assistant from Colorado, Rachel came to NYC to fight COVID-19 on the front line, where she cared for critically ill patients on ventilators, doing everything she could to keep them comfortable and alive. While she had originally committed to work 28 days, she refused to leave until she could bring at least one patient off a ventilator. She was charged with the care of a 40-year-old father of six who had a chance, and she stayed 11 extra days, caring for him, FaceTiming his family, reading to him and telling him stories. After her 39th day working at Kings County Hospital, he came off the ventilator. Without a doubt, the hard-fought victory by Rachel and her team will leave an indelible mark on the lives of her patient and his children.

It was a joy to host #HighgateHero Scott Sloyer at Park Central.
COVID-19 paused Scott’s sales job, so he decided to use this time to come to NYC and assist healthcare workers in their battle against the virus in any way he could – and he wound up staying twice as long as expected. Charged with sorting and delivering mail to 800+ medical workers staying at Park Central Hotel, Scott formed relationships with many doctors and nurses, and he noticed how receiving letters of encouragement boosted their morale. In addition to starting “Scott’s Cantina” as a place for healthcare workers to recharge with refreshments and snacks, he organized a letter writing campaign that provided hundreds of inspirational messages to these heroes, which he posted to walls around the Park Central. As someone with no healthcare experience, Scott’s selfless acts no doubt helped provide a soft place to land for front line workers, proving you don’t need a medical degree to help fight COVID-19.

Ellen DeGeneres is always a ray of sunshine. So is the amazing Barbara Edwards, a registered nurse at UF Health Shands Hospital in Florida. Barbara left her family to come to New York to help fight the crisis, believing she was needed more than ever - which is why this special surprise by The Ellen DeGeneres Show filmed here at Park Central is must-watch inspiration we all need right now. To Barbara and the other health care professionals currently in residence, we applaud your service. It may be over but for us, it's always #NationalNursesWeek!

Barbara Edwards moved away from her children, her job, her family and everything else so she could be a nurse on the frontlines in New York.
The season to give back has already stated!
Earlier this year we shared a series of truly wonderful stories about and from frontline workers who called Park Central their home away from home. We are thrilled to see another recognized this week when one such couple - the first to check into Park Central and stayed in the Big Apple for months to help with the onslaught of coronavirus cases - threw out the ceremonial first pitch for Game 1 of the World Series at Globe Life Field in Arlington! An honor well deserved.
