As the #CaliforniaFires continue to burn throughout both northern and southern regions of the state, it's not just flames that we need to worry about; wildfire smoke continues to impact the air quality of millions and is leaving many of us with itchy, dry, and irritated eyes.
We've assembled a few tips to combat the ocular symptoms of irritation brought on by wildfire smoke. We'd also like to include a friendly reminder to follow all local advisories regarding evacuations. Stay calm and stay safe, everyone!
19 years ago, one of the worst calamities in modern history would bring out the best of us: We witnessed the courage of the first responders who rushed to Ground Zero as billows of smoke rose from the New York City skyline, and the resolve of a country that stood united even in the face of such unprecedented loss.
Today, we honor the memories of the nearly 3,000 lives lost on that fateful day. We remember the tragedy, the stories of immeasurable bravery, and the unrelenting strength of our nation. #NeverForget

Don't forget to add the flu shot to your list of fall activities!
Flu season is upon us and staying healthy has never been more important. Ensuring you get the #flushot is one of the best ways you can protect yourself and your loved ones while doing your part to minimize the burden on our healthcare systems currently fighting #COVID19.
Remember, the flu shot takes two weeks to take effect, so don’t wait! The sooner you get vaccinated, the less likely you’ll get sick, and the less likely you’ll have severe symptoms if you do get sick.

It's difficult to overstate how important healthy vision is to a child's learning and development. Wondering if your child needs to see an eye doctor? Most children should have their eyes examined at age 3, then every two years as they enter school age.

November we recognize #DiabetesAwarenessMonth.
Diabetes is an incresingly common, chronic condition that can impact many other systems in the body when unmanaged, including one's vision. In fact, #diabeticretinopathy is a leading cause of vision loss, but has no symptoms in its earliest stages. That's why we recommend that those who are diabetic or pre-diabetic receive an annual eye exam to best protect their vision.

Most trails of California's beautiful beaches, parks, and forests remain open. While your chances of contracting COVID-19 outdoors are low, basic precautions still apply: bring a mask, remember to social distance, and bring along some hand sanitizer for good measure. Also, a pair of sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat will allow you to reap the benefits of Vitamin D without the risk of eye damage from the sun.

For most of us, this Thanksgiving is unlike any we’ve experienced before. During a year where we’ve been called to make great sacrifices, it’s important to reflect on the things that deserve our gratitude.
We are #thankful for the healthcare workers and first responders who have worked tirelessly to keep us safe. And we are thankful for our doctors, team members, and patients whose lives we get to impact each and every day.
We wish everyone a happy and enjoyable Thanksgiving!
“Not every disability is visible.” That’s the theme of this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, where we bring awareness to the unique experiences faced by those with disabilities. While not always obvious to the public, disabilities can have a significant impact on how one experiences the world.
Visual impairments remain among the most common forms of disability. Many times, the person may not be wearing glasses or using a white mobility cane as often times, the individual retains *some* sight. However, those impacted may be hesitant to disclose the limitations brought on by vision-impairing diseases such as glaucoma, or the neurological impact of a stroke.
Every person with a disability has a unique story to tell. #IDPD encourages us to refrain from judgement and listen to those experiences as we work towards building a more inclusive and accessible society.

With the uncertainty and disruption brought on by the #COVID19 pandemic, it’s understandable that many individuals have put off routine health or vision care. Unfortunately, this can have unintended consequences for patients, as chronic conditions could worsen and new conditions may go undetected early on, when diseases are most easily treated.
At Acuity Eye Group, we understand the seriousness of COVID-19, which is why we’ve instituted a number of precautions to ensure we can continue to care for you safely, such as conducting temperature checks, requiring masks, and enforcing social distancing in our waiting rooms.

February is #AMDAwarenessMonth. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of vision loss in individuals over fifty years old, and may present with few symptoms in its earliest stages. As there's no cure for this disease, early diagnosis and treatment are your best safeguards against vision loss.
So what's it like to have #AMD? Check out the example below.
February is #LowVision awareness month. Those with low vision may have difficulty completing daily tasks, even with the aid of regular glasses, contact lenses, or surgery.
While low vision can't be completely corrected, special devices are available to improve vision, such as tinted eyewear, magnifiers, and other devices.
If you should notice any changes in your vision, be sure to bring it up with your eye doctor!

As with most vision-threatening disease, early detection through regular screenings is your best weapon against #AMD.
However, regular exercise, a healthy diet, and other lifestyle changes can significantly reduce your risk of developing the disease and slow the progression of #visionloss.

No need to fret though: these simple solutions will help you find relief.
The 20-20-20-rule: Every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds.

March is #SaveYourVisionMonth! 👀 This month, we work to raise awareness on ways to protect your #vision and eye health.
As we spend more and more time on laptops, phones, and other digital devices, one of the easiest ways to give your eyes a break is by exercising the 20-20-20 rule, where you take a 20 second break from screens and look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes.
