Mayor Schewel has issued a Stay at Home Order effective 6:00 pm Thursday, March 26. The order is scheduled to expire April 30, although that date may be revised depending upon circumstances. We will comply with that order and be closed while it is in effect. Federal income tax returns and payments due April 15 are not due until July 15 and no penalties or interest will be imposed. Similar provisions apply to North Carolina payments and returns, although the NC Department of Revenue says it lacks statutory authority for a blanket waiver of interest charges. A legislative solution is understood to be under consideration. We have completed as many tax returns as possible and plan to mail any completed returns that have not been picked up at the close of business March 26. Remaining returns will be completed when we reopen. Although we will be closed, we will be monitoring emails regularly. I will also be in the office 2-3 times per week to return phone messages, file returns electronically and deal with any issues that cannot wait.
